August 12, 15: Timbers face Montreal and Rochester on the road

August 12, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

TimbersThe Portland Timbers are taking their 20 game undefeated streak on the road.

Montreal is the first stop, Wednesday, August 12 where the team has a date with the Le Impact. Match broadcast begins at 4:45pm.

Saturday, August 15th the men in green face the Rhinos in Rochester. Broadcast begins at 4:35pm.

Traditional powers Montreal and Rochester are in the middle of the pack this year, but are tough at home. This pair of matches will be tough, but this 2009 Timbers team keeps surprising us. Watch the matches on USLLive, or even better, head down to one of these local venues to watch the matches amongst your fellow fans:

  • Rogue Distillery & Public House (1339 NW Flanders)
  • All Ages: Beulahland (118 NE 28th Ave)
  • Cheerful Bullpen (1730 SW Taylor)
  • St. John’s Theater & Pub (8203 N. Ivanhoe St).

August 13: A Portland Film (and free doughnut) in Washougal, Washington

August 12, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

washougalffA small film festival 20 miles out of town would not normally garner any attention from this blog, but one of the selections for the Washougal Film Festival (who knew?) is Portland film maker Mike Vogel‘s The Waiting List.

The Waiting List, a grown up comedy about parenting was produced, directed, and filmed in Portland, and stars Portland actors. Voodoo Doughnuts even makes an appearance.

The film will be screened Thursday, August 13th at 7pm, and if you show up a little early you get some freebies:

1. A Free movie (and you’re supporting local, independent filmmaking–not to mention being one of the first people in the Portland area to see The Waiting List). And you can rub elbows with the director (um, okay, me) and some of the actors (like Audrey Walker and Amanda Englund) who will be doing Q&A after.

2. A Free Voodoo Doughnut (and you’re supporting your body’s need to creatively ingest sugary goodness).

Portland Timbers coverage roundup

August 11, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersThe MLS to Portland plans have dominated local media writing and bloggage about the Timbers this year, and much of that coverage has been negative. But now that the stadium renovation and funding plan is mostly settled, much of the anti-soccer and generic anti-government whingeing on the topic by various local critics is diminishing, and that which continues is largely irrelevant.

Meanwhile on the field the Timbers have been putting together a season for the ages. The defeat of the Whitecaps last Thursday earned the Timbers their first Cascadia Cup ever, and the team climbed into a first place tie with Carolina by beating the Battery. The Timbers have set and continue to extend the USL division 1 undefeated streak record (now at 20), and the Timbers are on pace this season to average around 10000 fans per game.

And there have been a few bright spots in Timbers coverage this year that bear mentioning.

  • The Timbers Blog at Oregonlive has returned to life this year under the capable guidance of Kip Kesgard.
  • At The Timber Mill Allison Andrews continues to do a fantastic and thorough job of herding statistics and recapping every match, and of course hosting and maintaining the invaluable Soccer City USA message board.
  • A new blog, Dropping Timber posts highlight, previews, and statistics with regularity.
  • The Portland Timbers USL Blog at The Offside has been excellent as usual (but no new posts in a month!?)
  • And Mark Evans continues his sporadic, but excellent PTFC2K9 Timbers coverage from China at the otherwise soccer-hating Blogtown.
  • And lastly, a must-read article at Pitch Invasion comparing Portland’s do-it-yourself soccer culture to the sudden emergence of Seattle’s heavily marketed product: DIY or Prefab? Portland, Seattle and Success in American Soccer Culture

2009 Twilight Criterium – bike race, with crashes

August 7, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

twilight2009The 2009 Twilight Criterium takes place tonight, in the North Park Blocks. I recommend watching from the Widmer beer garden.

Two years ago the race moved from the South Park Blocks near the Art Museum to its current location in the North Park Blocks. I attended a few times at the old location, but have yet to make it since they changed location. The old course had hills. Racers whipped down Broadway with a 90 degree left turn up Madison that some riders couldn’t quite negotiate, sending them into the hay bales, or their wheels couldn’t handle the stress and literally crumpled beneath them. But then the bloody kneed racers jump right back on, stopping only to replace the wheel if necessary. Impressive stuff.

The course surrounds the North Park Blocks of downtown Portland, creating an island oasis of 360-degree viewing, music, food and beverage. There are several places where you can get close enough to feel the wind from the peloton. Each lap is one-half mile long which takes the racers just over one minute to complete. The course is highly technical so fields are limited to eighty riders.

The event is free to attend and great for families. Come downtown Friday evening, to experience the excitement yourself.

The race starts at 6:30, but the street closures begin about 4pm.
