August 6-9: The Bite, a Library block party, and the Bridge Pedal

August 6, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

It’s not just soccer festivities this weekend; there are a lot other things to do:

Bit of OregonFriday through Sunday the Bite of Oregon celebrates the food and wine of Oregon at Waterfront Park.

An impressive lineup of restaurants from all over the state will be preparing all manner of food, and of course craft beer and wine will be flowing. There are also several stages with live music.

Adults get in for $8.00 and children under 12 get in free. (General admission fee covers entrance and entertainment but does not included food and beverage.)

Multnomah_County_Library_logoThe Central Library Block Party takes place Saturday, August 8th from noon to 4pm on SW Taylor between 10th and 11th. This event is primarily for the kids, as you can see from the activities lineup:

  • The Last Regiment of Syncopated Drummers
  • Oregon Zoo
  • Kumoricon
  • SCRAP
  • All-ages PDXSwap clothing exchange
  • Learn circus skills from W.E. C.A.R.E.
  • Decorate cupcakes with Western Culinary Institute
  • Get your face painted
  • Make altered tees

Sunday morning the annual Bridge Pedal takes place on and around downtown Portland’s bridges. This is the one day each year you can bike across the Marquam or Fremont bridges without breaking your neck or the law.Register online or at a number of local bike shops. Not much of a cyclists? Then sign up for the Stride, and walk across the top span of the Fremont Bridge for some impressive views – views are much more enjoyable at a walking pace anyway! If you’re driving anywhere Sunday, sleep in until after 10am – all the bridges should be reopened to regular car traffic by then.

August 6-9 soccer: Timbers, a sidewalk sale, and the Community Shield

August 6, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

In addition to the Timbers matches Thursday and Saturday this week, there are a number of other soccer events this weekend.

Far PostFar Post Soccer Supply‘s (825 SW 14th) annual sidewalk clearance sale starts today and runs through Sunday, August 9th. I make it to this sale every year. Great deals on soccer balls, jerseys, and everything else you need for soccer. I need a new pair of adidas – here’s to hoping they’re on sale!

FA Community ShieldThe FA’s Community Shield match is the traditional kick-off to the English football season.

Last year’s Premier League champs take on the FA Cup winner, so this year that means Manchester United and Chelsea FC.

Kells is showing the match, bright and early, at 7am Sunday, August 9th.

The English Premier League regular season starts next Saturday the 15th!

August 6, 8: Timbers host Vancouver, Charleston

August 5, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

TimbersThe Timbers face the Vancouver Whitecaps Thursday, August 6th at PGE Park. Kickoff is at 7pm.

The Whitecaps score a lot of goals (tied with the Timbers for the league lead at 28 goals, despite playing one fewer game), but also give up a lot of goals (24 to the Timbers 10) – so this should be an entertaining match. It is also an important match: the Timbers are unbeaten since their away opener at Vancouver in April, and can extend that streak to 19 matches with a win or tie. A win will be the Timbers’ 107th USL win.

The Timbers play again Saturday, August 8th when the Charleston Battery visit PGE Park.

Charleston has given up even fewer goals this season than the Timbers, but has scored far fewer (despite having former Timbers scorer Dizzy Dan Antoniuk on the roster). The Battery are currently at the top of the USL-1 standings. The Timbers trail by only two points (and have played two fewer games) so it’s possible a Timbers win Saturday will also mean first place. (Of course the Timbers play Thursday, Charleston plays Friday, and Carolina, who are tied with the Timbers in 2nd place play Wednesday and Saturday – so we won’t really know until the dust clears Saturday who’s on top).

Vancouverite explains why Portland beats Vancouver

August 3, 2009 by Dave Knows 11 Comments

Update: The Tyee has published a three part series by Christine McLaren, of which Why Portland Beats Vancouver was the first installment. Installment number two is Portland’s Bicycle Brilliance. Part three: Portland’s Progress on Homelessness.

vancouvervsportlandI’ve never been to Vancouver, B.C., but it’s been on my shortlist of places to visit for quite some time (and very soon it will be much easier to make the trip).

But I have had high expectations for the place, as it always seems to be near the top of the best-places-to-live lists, and like Portland, is reknown for its compact urban center and urban planning. But it tells you how much I know about Vancouver that I was surprised by the findings of Vancouver, B.C. writer Christine McLaren in her article for The Tyee: Why Portland Beats Vancouver.

Free art gallery shows every first Thursday of the month? Massive burritos with all the fixings for under $5? $2 Beer!?

You mean you can’t get these things in Vancouver!?

And apparently in Vancouver it can cost upwards of half a million dollars for a liquor permit, on top of the onerous zoning requirements. Whereas in Portland . . .

Opening a bar in Portland is an almost universally obtainable goal. Assuming you pass the proper criminal record check and provide a statement of funding, a full on liquor license from the state costs a grand total of $402.62 on top of a $100 business license from the city and a few other small fees.

These are two examples from the piece that really jumped out at me. Vancouver is still the home of my favorite radio show, and of course there are the coffee shops. After reading the article, I still plan on visiting. But my expectations have definitely been tempered.

Note: Later this week we have a chance to witness another competition between the two cities, as the Portland Timbers host the Vancouver Whitecaps at PGE Park at 7pm. See you Thirsty Thursday!
