October 9-11, 16-18: Portland Nursery Apple Tasting Event

October 5, 2009 by Dave Knows 4 Comments

Update: Click here for 2011 Portland Nursery Apple Tasting Event details

Portland NurseryOver the next two weekend (Friday-Sunday, October 9-11, and 16-18) the Portland Nursery hosts the 22nd Annual Apple Tasting Event at the Stark location (5050 SE Stark).

Apple tasting, old fashioned cider pressing, apple desserts, and cooking demonstrations; normally I wouldn’t get too excited these sorts of activities, but last year Heather and I attended the festival and enjoyed it immensely. It helps that Heather freakin’ loves apples!

appleline2008The apple tasting this year features over 65 varieties of apples and pears (view the full list here pdf). Arrive early before the line gets too long.

The same varieties of apples and pears in the tasting are available to take home at $0.89/pound ($0.99/pound for Asian pears).

As you might expect (and as I complained about last year), there are a million kids at these wholesome activities, so I’m excited about a new addition to the fest: the 1st Annual Artisan Cider Festival! On Saturday and Sunday both weekends, Wandering Aengus Ciderworks will be bringing several styles of hard cider to taste ($5 tasting fee), and take home, and will be offering tips on making cider at home. Here’s to hoping the hard cider garden is rugrat-free!

And there’s live music too: Saturday, October 10th Sneakin’ Out plays in the morning (10am to noon), and Bluestone County plays from 1pm to 4pm. Sunday, October 11th Little Sue and Lyn Conover play in the morning (10am to noon), and the Pete Krebs Gypsy Trio from 1pm to 4pm.

Saturday, October 17th the morning act is Hurricane Hole, followed by Caña Son in the afternoon. And Sunday, October 18th The Mighty Filberts are followed by the Klezmocracy Quintet.

October 10: 2009 Fresh Hop Beer Tastival

Update: 2010 Fresh Hop Beer Tastival details here!

The Portland installment of this year’s Fresh Hop Beer Tastivals takes place Saturday, October 10th, at Oaks Park. John Foyston explains fresh hop beer in his blog post about the first 2009 Tastival in Hood River last weekend:

Fresh Hop beer is made during the short window of hop harvest every year, with straight-from-the-vine hops. Instead of the usual process of immediately drying and sending baled hop cones to cold storage, the fragile fresh hops are taken straight to the brewery and, in most cases, tossed into a brew that very same day. Fresh hops possess a whole range of aromatics, flavors and resinous textures that are often changed during drying.

The festival runs from noon until 9pm (free Oaks Park Train Rides until 6pm, but alas, other rides will be closed). $5 tasting glass required to taste.

(Visit the Oregon Brewers Guild On Tap blog for information on attending the Friday, October 9th preview of the Tastival. )

Below is the tentative list of beers available Saturday:

Official MLS Portland Timbers site launched

October 3, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

mlsportland2011PortlandMLS2011.com, The Official Site of the MLS Portland Timbers was launched yesterday. The site looks pretty slick – get a load of that golden buzz saw blade, and the animated countdown graphic! – but there’s not much content yet.

The unveiling of the new site coincides with the launch of Phase II of MLS 2011 ticket deposits. If you really want to attend matches come 2011, I strongly recommend putting down your deposit now (I’m speaking as a long time fan, not a shill). Portland has a tradition of strong support for soccer and the Timbers dating back to the NASL days. If Toronto’s recent MLS launch is any indication, the Portland MLS club will be selling out PGE Park for years to come.
