November 12, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersMake sure to tune in to Strong at Night on 95.5 tonight (Thursday, November 12) at 6pm.

Strong will have MLS commissioner Don Garber and Timbers owner Merritt Paulson on the show.

Hopefully we’ll get some answers in the show to some of the questions about the news below:

North America Gets a New Soccer League – the TOA! By Kip Kesgard at Oregonlive.com

Former USL-1 2009 clubs in Vancouver, Montreal, Carolina, Miami, and Minnesota will join a new professional soccer league, which will start play in 2010. The league submitted an application to the United States Soccer Federation to compete as a division II men’s league. [More]

Happy Hour at Higgins

[updated 4/7/2011]

HigginsWith so many new, interesting, innovative, and exceptional restaurants in Portland, it’s easy to forget about the granddaddy of Portland regional cuisine, Higgin’s Restaurant (1239 SW Broadway).

Higgin’s is consistent. The food, drinks, and service are all generally excellent. I’ve been a semi-regular customer (almost exclusively in the bar, which they call the bistro) since the place opened in the mid-90s. I’ve had scores of meals there, and I only regret ordering two or three.

Higgin’s has, in some ways, ruined me for other Portland restaurants. The only other place that has been as consistently good to me (though in only about a half dozen visits so far) is Lovely Hula Hands.

For me, Higgin’s is the gold standard. If I order something in a restaurant that costs as much as something vaguely equivalent at Higgin’s, it better be damned good. If it costs more, it better be awesome. Unfortunately almost every restaurant in town falls short on these measurements. It has finally dawned on me that one interpretation of the data is that Higgin’s is reasonably priced.

At Portland Food and Drink the Food Dude has a new review of this Portland mainstay. He too was struck by a similar realization.

Maybe my memory is failing, but I don’t remember the restaurant being so reasonably priced, or, as I said before, the portions so large. It is easy for a party of two to have dinner with a couple of glasses of wine for less than $100. You will walk out the door with enough leftovers for a good lunch the next day. Compared to some of the other restaurants I’ve reviewed, this is a deal.

Which brings me to the topic of this post: Over the summer Higgin’s quietly started offering happy hour specials, so the prices have gotten even better.

In the bistro from 3pm to 7pm 4pm-6:30pm on week days, drinks are 20% $1.00 off. (Check with your waitron on the drink discount limitations; I know it applies toward cocktails, wine by the glass, and beers – both draft and bottles- but I’m not sure about bottles of wine.)

Each day there are a couple, constantly changing happy hour food specials too. Last night we enjoyed the $8 crepes, which were folded into pockets, stuffed with charcuterie meats and a little fontina cheese, and then breaded and fried and served with a sweet apricot (maybe?) compote.

Just another good reason not to forget Higgins.

Twitter and Fawlty Towers giveaway update: Drawing Monday 11/16

November 11, 2009 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Fawlty Towers Box SetAs I announced last week, I have a Fawlty Towers: The Complete Collection DVD box set to give away, and a goal of 150 followers for the DaveKnowsPDX Twitter account.

And I am almost there. At last count (5am 11/11) DaveKnowsPDX has accumulated 129 twitter followers, and fifteen have direct messaged me that they are interested in the drawing for the DVDs.

But I have no idea how long it will take to attract the last 21 followers, so rather than make everyone wait, the drawing will be held next Monday, November 16th. (If I hit 150 followers before that, the drawing will still be Monday – I’m moving over the weekend and won’t have time for much else!)

So to sum it up:

  1. Follow me on Twitter
  2. Direct message me that you are interested in the Fawlty Towers: The Complete Collection drawing
  3. Stay tuned on Monday, November 16th!

And thanks to everyone who has already followed DaveKnowsPDX, and to the fifteen people who have already messaged me their interest in the DVD drawing!

November 15: Steve’s Cheese and Foster and Dobbs anniversary parties

November 10, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Steve's Cheese logoOn Sunday, November 15 Steve’s Cheese (2321 NW Thurman Street), home of one of the best selections of cheeses in town, and also the best logo in the cheese mongering business, is hosting a Fourth anniversary party.

According to the Pacific Northwest Cheese Project, last year’s event included a cast of cheese and chocolate makers, food artisans, and wine from Square Deal Wine.

I haven’t found many details on this year’s event besides the hours (1pm to 5pm), and that Square Deal Wines will be breaking out some bottles and everyone is welcome to come help us celebrate the great paring for wine and cheese under one roof.

As I learn more I will update this post.

Foster and DobbsCoincidentally, one of Portland’s other premier cheese mongers, is also celebrating its Fourth Anniversary: Foster and Dobbs (2518 NE 15th) this Sunday, November 15th. And here are the details from the Cheese (B)Log:

From 1-4pm on Saturday, November 14th we’ll be tasting new releases from Owen Roe and Sineann, new chocolates from Xocolatl de David, and the Obamas’ favorite treats, Fran’s Grey Salt Caramels in Dark Chocolate. Plus, Ellen Jackson and Piper Davis will be here offering delicious samples and signing copies of their new cookbook, THE GRAND CENTRAL BAKING BOOK: Breakfast Pastries, Cookies, Pies and Satisfying Savories from the Pacific Northwest’s Celebrated Baker. There will also be samples of tasty jams (including Ayers Creek newest crop), honeys, olive oils, cheese, and live music! It’s our birthday party and we hope to see you here!

November 14: Hair of the Dog Anniversary Dock Sale

November 10, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Hair of Dog LogoThe Hair of the Dog 16th Anniversary Dock Sale is this Saturday, November 14 from 10am-4pm at the brewery (4509 SE 23rd Ave).

This is one of the most anticipated beer events of the year for Portland beer fans. Alan Sprints tells BeerAdvocate that the beers available this year include:

Cherry Adam, Blue Dot IPA, Fred from the Wood, Doggie Claws and a new release, Michael. Michael is a Flanders Red, made in memory of Michael Jackson. The beer was brewed in January of 2007, and aged in American oak and Sherry barrels since then. It is just over 6% alcohol, made with Organic Pilsner, Vienna and Munich malts and fermented with a variety of yeast and bacteria. I will also have some older batches of Claws available and larger format bottles of some Beers.

You read that right, a new Flanders Red called Michael, in memory of the late Michael Jackson [the beer writer].

(And to help you plan ahead to next year, and the year after that, Beer News writes that Alan Sprints also revealed on Twitter last month that he was “aging 130lb of peaches with Fred in a Rye Whiskey cask for a year” so there is a sneak peak at what is to come for the 17th Anniversary. He has another batch of Flanders aging for the 18th Anniversary.)
