November 5: Guy Fawkes Night and First Thursday

November 5, 2009 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

The weekend starts today.

It’s Guy Fawkes Night! But there are plenty of other things to do besides blowing up Parliament, or enjoying a groaty pudding:

Firstly, a couple Thursday events were featured in yesterday’s weekend roundup:

  • Siren Nation festivities start today – visit the website for details.
  • And the fall Adidas Clearance Event kicks off at the Expo Center.

And then of course today is First Thursday. (Let the fine drinkers at First Thirstday light the way).

Or, if you prefer music to art, head down to the Jade Lounge (2342 SE Ankeny) at 8pm for the GEMS & GIANTS show:

Cheap drinks and eats. Chill spot and beats.
It’s a time honored tradition.
Standing 8 & Clarence Duffy pulling those seldom heard sounds you crave all for free. For you. For real.

November 5-8: Siren Nation, Coffee Fair, Adidas sale, and Raising Arizona with Cort and Fatboy

November 4, 2009 by Dave Knows 6 Comments

It’s tempting to spend November in hibernation mode, but there is just too much damn stuff to do . . .

sirennation150The Siren Nation festival takes place November 5-8 in Portland, all over town.

Siren Nation’s mission is to inspire and empower women of all ages to create their own art and to highlight the many achievements of women in the arts. Siren Nation promotes and showcases the original work of women artists by creating year round performance, exhibition, and educational opportunities.

Visit the Siren Nation website for more information.

adidasIf you’re like me, you can’t get enough soccer apparel, and you don’t care for Nike’s stuff (and also you stopped playing soccer 4 years ago but still wear soccer apparel, if you’re like me). Well I got word there’s going to be an Adidas “blowout sale” at the Expo Center from the 5th through the 8th: footwear, apparel, and designer apparel…nothing over $30.

Admission is free, and the hours are 10am to 8pm on the 5th, 6th, and 7th; 10am to 6pm on the 8th.

cortAndFatboyFriday, November 6th, the Cort & Fatboy Midnight Movie is Raising Arizona, at the Bagdad Theater (get there by 9pm if you want a seat!). Geek In the City explains:

Bask in the glory as hundreds of your fellow Portland Geeks celebrate The Coen Brother’s seminal classic and quite possibly Nicholas Cage’s greatest performance! Even better than beer, tots, & Coen? Our assembled masses will show the mouth-breathers at Alpha Broadcasting just what a “bunch of nerd kids” can do… All without misplacing our balls! As always, it is 21 and over, tickets are just $3 and from what you I hear at www.cortandfatboy.com, some solid mediocrity is coming. Don’t miss out!

CoffeeFairThe World Forestry Center is hosting a Coffee Fair on Saturday and Sunday, November 7th and 8th, from 10am to 3pm each day.

Savor and sip coffees from around the globe as bigwig to backyard roasters roll out new products, retro brewing techniques, and tempt the taste buds with the world’s most commonly used drug.

Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, and $5 for children over 3.

The great Dave Knows Twitter migration and Fawlty Towers 3 disc set giveaway

November 3, 2009 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

FAWLTYTOWERSBOXSETSo as many of you know, I am on Twitter, using my real name.

But I also have the Twitter username DaveKnowsPDX, which has been gathering dust for a while. It seems more of a natural fit for the Dave Knows Portland site, so I’ve been thinking of transitioning to it.

But it ‘s seemed like a hassle, both for me and for the folks who already follow me on my other Twitter account, so I’ve put off making the change.

Just recently, however the kind folks helping to market the new Fawlty Towers: The Complete Collection dvd box set, with brand new extras including John Cleese commentary and cast interviews, have given me a free copy to do with what I want, and I have decided to give it away.*

And it dawned on me that perhaps I could kill two birds with one stone by using the boxed set as an incentive for the Twitter migration.

So here’s what I propose:

Follow me on Twitter at DaveKnowsPDX (please direct-message me that you are interested in the giveaway after you begin following), and when I reach 150 followers I will draw one of the interested follower names out of a proverbial hat and present to that lucky person a still-cellophane-wrapped copy of the Fawlty Towers: The Complete Collection boxed set.

*The Fawlty Towers folks also asked me to point you to the John Cleese lookalike contest, the Facebook page, and the Twitter, so there you go.

Even more fries, cheese, and gravy goodness at Portland Poutine

November 2, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Gumbo Cheese Fries at the Red FoxWe have posted the second poutine review over at Portland Poutine, the first in what I like to call the poutinesque category. Poutinesque meaning it lacks or exchanges one of the three key ingredients for something else. How does gumbo in lieu of gravy sound to you?

After an early afternoon last Sunday sampling the wares at the Great American Distillers Festival, we needed something substantial in our stomachs. And I don’t know about you, but Gumbo Cheese Fries sound awfully substantial.

Read the rest: Gumbo Cheese Fries at Red Fox.

HomemadeThen, over this past weekend, we made a trip to Trader Joe’s and, lo and behold, cheese curds!

Look at that orange cheese! We had never seen cheese curds at Trader Joe’s before. And when I tossed them into the shopping cart, it made a certain Portland Boy very happy. We already had a seemingly bottomless supply of poutine gravy packets at home.

I think you can probably Guess What We Made for Dinner.
