Lovely Hula Hands closing on New Years Eve

December 5, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Lovely Hula HandsSadly, Lovely Hula Hands, one of my favorite Portland restaurants, will operate for the last time on New Years Eve, 2009.

In a mailing list email sent out this morning, Lovely Hula Hands owners Sarah and Jane Minnick write:

Also, at the end of this month, Lovely Hula Hands will be closing. The reasons for this are many, but in the end it comes down to one thing above all. When we first opened the restaurant six years ago, a family member was our chef. As time went on and this changed, we found ourselves in the position of running a restaurant from the front of the house. That is, we relied on someone from outside the family to direct the kitchen. As you know from the loyalty of our customers and the critical reception that Lovely Hula Hands has received, we have always been lucky with the talented people we’ve chosen. But now it just makes sense for us to focus on our new venture 100 % and have more of a hand in the production of the things we serve.

We plan to have a great final month at Lovely Hula Hands and finish strong with the same seasonal menu, cocktails, etc. New Years Eve will be our last night open.

On the bright side, they are opening a new restaurant next door, Lovely Fifty Fifty, sometime in January!

It will have a lot of things in common with LHH- a seasonal menu, buying exclusively from local farmers and ranchers, a hefty list of salads and starters, and even one or two wood fired entrees along with the pizza offerings. We will also have six flavors of seasonal homemade ice cream in a big case up front and people can get a scoop or a pint to go. Our current staff will stay with us and work next door, so no one is being put out of work in this economy.

Hula Hoop Resurgent

In this video filmmaker, web developer, and spiritual geek and obviously, hula hooper, Kent Bye talks about the modern resurgence of hula hooping, as a modern dance form and spiritual practice, hula hooping throughout the entirety of his 5 minute presentation.

This was one of the impressive, thoughtful, amusing and amazing presentations I missed because I did not make it to last month’s Ignite 7 at the Bagdad Theater. (Save the date: Ignite 9 takes place on March 3, 2010!)

Two More Gone, Who’s Left Standing? By Kip Kesgard at Oregonlive.com

Where does this leave the USL-1? Right now, they have teams in Portland, Puerto Rico, Austin and planned sides in New York and Ottawa, Ontario. Cleveland’s status in existing is unclear as they are working out ownership issues after they jumped from USL-2 to USL-1 last season. Rumors are circulating that the City Stars want to return to USL-2, but nothing official has been mentioned. New York and Ottawa are in the early stages, so we don’t know if they would be ready for 2010, so this leaves stable franchises in Austin, Puerto Rico and the Timbers. [More]

A Conversation with Mandjou Keita At International Soccer Network

We spoke with Portland Timbers striker Mandjou Keita before he left for his loan assignment at Salgaocar Sport Club in India’s first division. Keita literally has a world of experience with time spent with Guinea’s U-23 National Team, Malaysia’s Perak FC, and Brunei’s DPMM FC. He also had stints in Vietnam, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. His experience in India should only add to his development. [More]

December 4-6: Culture, Repeal Day, and Artisan Beer, Food, Wine, and Spirits

December 3, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

The approaching weekend took me by surprise. There are as many worthwhile events as on some of the busiest summer weekends.

Holiday Ale FestivalHoliday Ale Festival

The fest continues its run, all through the weekend, at Pioneer Courthouse Square. The central downtown location means your steps away from transit when the night comes to an end. Though cold and often wet outside, inside the dry tent the beers are big and warming. The Organic Brewers Festival in May is my favorite, but I understand why this festival is tops for many.

Nightmare_100The Cort and Fatboy Midnight Movie

The movie this Friday, December 4th is the Tim Burton classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Feel free to sing along.

The solid mediocrity takes place at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne). Admission is $3 (21 and over only), and arrive early if you want a seat!

ScanFair 2009

scanfair2009Come for the Scandinavian food, crafts, and the 54th crowning of Oregon’s Lucia Queen of Light. Stay for the Pickled Herring Eating Contest at noon Saturday. The Scandinavian Heritage Foundation’s 25th Annual ScanFair takes place this weekend at PSU’s Smith Center.

Visit the website for more details, including the entertainment schedule for both Saturday and Sunday.

SeasonsEatings100
Season’s Eatings

A benefit for the Oregon Food Bank, Season’s Eatings is a local artisans food, wine and spirits market that takes place Saturday, December 5th from noon to 5pm at the New Deal Distillery and Tasting Room (1311 SE 9th).

Some of the region’s best chocolates, cheeses, wines, spirits, charcuterie, baked goods, and pasta will be available to sample and to purchase.

Repeal Day
endofpro100Celebrate the anniversary of the end of Prohibition, all day Saturday December 5th . . . anywhere you’d like!

Join me in a toast to our brewers, vintners, distillers, distributors, publicans, bartenders, waitrons, and friends!

December 3: Civil War Alternatives

December 2, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Most local bars will be showing the “Civil War” game on Thursday, December 3rd. Where can one go to avoid the pointy ball? What activities are available to the social drinker who doesn’t particularly like gridiron football or the Ducks and Beavers?

The First Thursday Gallery Walk takes place December 3rd too (as does First Thirstday). And there are plenty of bars with no, or few, TVs (the Horse Brass Pub comes to mind). Thursday would also be a good time to catch a movie, or check out the Zoo Lights. You might consider getting some holiday shopping in; Powell’s will probably be less crowded than normal too.

Here are the Dave Knows recommended Civil War alternative events:

Holiday Ale FestivalHOLIDAY ALE FESTIVAL

What are the two worst things about beer festivals? That’s right, long lines and fratboys.

Visit the Holiday Ale Festival on Thursday, December 3rd at Pioneer Courthouse Square, when there will be far fewer of both!

Stay warm and dry and claustrophobic under the big tent. Take the Max home after you enjoy too many beers with too high an alcohol content and too much cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.

The festival runs from Wednesday, December 2nd through Sunday, the 6th. Find out more, and check out the Dave Knows Tasting List: Holiday Ale Festival 2009.

Timbers ArmyTIMBERS ARMY FIRST THURSDAY

Usually this gathering takes place at the Cheerful Bullpen, but . . .

Note: We are changing the venue for this to be at the Bitter End Pub as a certain game is on and we think it might be a bit congested at the usual meet up place (don’t worry, the Bitter End will be showing this game too!)

So head down to The Bitter End Pub (1981 W Burnside) at 7:01pm Thursday. You may catch glimpses of a certain game, but at least you’ll be in good company.

GEMS & GIANTS

You can’t go wrong with only the finest in soul and funk, especially if, as usual, DJs Standing 8 and Clarence Duffy are spinning.

Our bimonthly DJ night for your weekend jump off. Featuring happy hour drink specials, delicious $3 appetizers, and only the finest in funky music, this party just gets better every time.

Brought to you by Hall of Records and the Jade Lounge (2342 SE Ankeny), the show takes place from 7:30pm – 10:00pm Thursday, December 3rd.
