December 9, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Timbers saleThe annual Portland Timbers and Beavers Holiday Sale takes place this Saturday, December 12 at PGE Park.

Coffee, hot cocoa and snacks will be available for purchase. Plus, Timber Joey will be on-site throughout the event to sign autographs. Don’t miss this great opportunity to secure your holiday gifts.

From 10am to 2pm both stores inside the park will be open selling last year’s stuff for up to 75% off (which brings prices down to the realm of reasonable).

Use the SW 20th and Morrison entrance in the NW corner of the park to enter.

Portland-style Moviemaking with Mike Vogel

December 9, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

A couple weekends ago Heather and I had the pleasure of sitting in on a half day of shooting of Mike Vogel‘s latest feature, Did You Kiss Anyone? a romantic comedy about marriage, sex, and shi**ing with the door open.

Heather explains:

Up until that day, we had never met Mike. We had enjoyed his fucking brilliant Snowpocalypse video from the storms last year. And the charming episodes of Did You Cast Anyone? And as usual, we exchanged tweets about what we ate for lunch. Because that’s all anyone does on the Twitter.

December 12-13: Handmade Bazaar and Crafty Wonderland’s Super Colossal Holiday Sale

December 8, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

handmadebazaarSaturday, the winter Handmade Bazaar, Portland’s bi-annual buy/sell/trade handmade arts & crafts sale, takes place at Mississippi Studios (3939 N Mississippi) from 11am to 4pm.

The website does not provide a list of this weekends’ vendors, but you can get an idea of the type of artists and crafters that will be participating on the links page, which includes a list of previous Handmade Bazaar participants (the bazaars have been going strong since 2000!).

And on Sunday the Crafty Wonderland Super Colossal Holiday Sale takes place at the Convention Center (777 NE MLK Jr – exhibit hall D).

Crafty180x150-bannerAbout a million vendors (well a couple hundred) will be setting up booths and tables, selling everything from reversible hats to quirky t-shirts, hand made jewelry to stationery, and plenty of bad art . . . I kid, I kid! But with over 200 vendors even if some of the stuff is . . . uh, interesting, some is bound to strike your fancy.

The sale’s hours are 11am to 7pm. Admission is free and the first 200 visitors get a free goodie bag!

December 12: Holiday Booze Bazaar

December 8, 2009 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Whiskey!Really, the 4th Annual Holiday Booze Bazaar is the only bazaar you need – who doesn’t like booze?!

I know what I’m doing Saturday.

Hosted by House Spirits Distillery (2025 SE 7th) from noon until 5pm Saturday, December 12, their new whiskeys will be available to taste, and to buy.

We will be releasing 3 different whiskeys, all 100% malted barley:
-56.79% (cask strength) straight malt whiskey in 375ml (limited amount)
-50% white dog (unaged) in 375ml (limited amount)
-44.93% straight malt whiskey in 750ml

But that’s not all! The local shops below will be hawking their wares as well: Chop Butchery, Garden State, Imbibe Magazine, Jacobs Creamery, Joyas de Panama Cigars, Rogue Creamery, Xocolatl de David, Koi Fusion, Cellar Door Coffee Roasters, and Whiffies Fried Pies.

If you made it to last weekend’s Season’s Eatings at New Deal you get the idea. But this event has more food carts!

Admission is free, must be 21 or over. Hours are noon until 5. See you Saturday!

When Canada sends you arctic blasts, make Glühwein

December 7, 2009 by Dave Knows 7 Comments

brrrrWinter’s official start is still weeks away, but already we are being reminded that sunny is not the same as warm.

But as I like to say, when Canada sends you arctic blasts, make Glühwein.

I made my first batch of the season last night, with a new secret ingredient, recipe below!

If you’d rather someone else prepare your Glühwein for you, note that it is available at Prost! (4237 N Mississippi), The Berlin Inn (3131 SE 12th), and other places around town.

GluehweinDave Knows’ Arctic Blast Glühwein Recipe

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) inexpensive dry red wine
  • 4 cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2-3 star anise
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • Sugar or honey (to taste)
  • 2/3 cup (approx. 150 ml) Bärenfang, aka Bärenjäger – a German honey-flavored liqueur

In a saucepan heat all ingredients except the Bärenfang.  Bring to a low simmer, then take off heat, remove half the lemon slices (unless you like your Glühwein really citrusy), and let steep for an hour (or two).

Add Bärenfang, and sugar or honey to taste. Heat to just shy of boiling.  Pour through a sieve into warmed-up mugs. Enjoy!

I perfected another recipe last winter which I call Winter Solstice Glühwein; you can find that recipe here: Glühwein conditions in Portland.
