Hot Drinks from Cold Bloggers

December 14, 2009 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

Gluhwein! There’s nothing we can do about the cold weather, but the effects can be ameliorated.

This past weekend I visited House Spirits‘ Holiday Booze Bazaar, and, the weekend before, Season’s Eatings at New Deal Distillery.

Now what’s a poor cold blogger to do with all the acquired booze? Make a warming cocktail of course! And I’ll be starting with these recipes from local blogs the next time an arctic blast™ approaches (or maybe sooner):

  • John’s Tom & Jerrys from Good Stuff NW
  • Wassail from Jeffrey Morgenthaler
  • Hot Applejack Toddy from Cocktailia
  • Hot Toddy also from Cocktailia
  • The World’s Best Hot Buttered Rum from My Life on the Rocks
  • Arctic Blast Glühwein from yours truly
  • Winter Solstice Glühwein also my own invention!

Now to the roundup:

TimbersThe Cold Hasn’t Stopped The Timbers News! By Kip Kesgard at Oregonlive.com

Even though the weather outside is extremely frightful, there’s plenty of Timbers and USL news to read about in front of a warm, toasty computer. I have to say that this has been one of the more active offseasons I have seen in quite a long time, but under the circumstances with all the situations going on, it’s expected. [More]

And now, without further adieu, a couple recipes from Timber Jim (from the Favorite Recipe thread on the Soccer City USA Message Board).

Timber Jim’s BBQ Turkey*

1 large Turkey
1 bag of Morton’s Sugar Cure
1 BBQ capable of containing Turkey and supplying indirect heat
1 Roasting pan
1 Roasting rack
1 accurate meat thermometer
Tin foil

Make sure Turkey is completely thawed
Remove neck bone and giblets
Rub down bird with sugar cure liberally (inside and out)
Place thermometer into breast
Cover Mr Turkey with foil
Place on rack inside roasting pan
Pull foil off for last hour of cooking time to brown and insure correct temp.
The drippings are to salty to use for gravy

Enjoy!

Timber Jim’s Strange Breakfast Sandwich*

1 Australian Toaster Biscuit
1 Large Fresh Egg
1 1/4″ slice of favorite ham
1 slice of favorite cheese
1 slice of pineapple

Pop split toaster biscuit into toaster
Microwave scrambled egg for 1 minute
Light application of mayo to bread
Place egg, then cheese, then ham and top with pineapple
Place bread on top and re-nuke for 20 seconds to melt cheese

Portable and tasty.
Enjoy

December 29: Charles Phoenix Retro Holiday Slide Show

December 10, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

charles_holiday2009R2I had the privilege last year of attending Charles Phoenix’s celebration of atomic living at the Clinton Street Theater, where he presented a live comedy slide show performance celebrating 50s and 60s, theme parks, space age style, car culture, roadside attractions and more! He even had a special presentation about Oregon’s own Enchanted Forest, with creator Roger Tofte, and family, in attendance.

He returned in December last year for another, holiday themed, show, but alas – I missed it.

So I was excited to see that Charles Phoenix is bringing his Retro Holiday Slide Show to Portland once again this year. From an email I received from the Portland’s Mid-Century Modern League:

After a sell-out performance in October 2008, Pop Culture Humorist and Author Charles Phoenix brings his live Holiday slide show performance to The Hollywood Theater one night only, December 29th. This laugh-out-loud celebration of Mid-century Holiday style is being presented by The Mid Century Modern League.

Charles Phoenix super-charges the classic living room slide show by reinventing it into a hip and high octane celebration of classic and kitschy Mid-century American life and style. His informed and often hilarious narration of the very best of his massive collection of flea-market found Kodachrome slides will inspire your imagination and make your spirit soar!

In this hilarious Holiday show you’ll see how Americans decorated, dressed up, dined, and drank to celebrate- New Years, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas in the 50s and 60s.

Audiences from coast to coast are delighted by Charles’ stylish suits, friendly personality and infectious enthusiasm as he puts his unique spin on kitschy and classic American holidays in “Charles Phoenix’s Retro Holiday Slide Show”.

(Alas, I’m going to miss this show too because I’ll be in Los Angeles – but I’m going to Disneyland, so it’s kinda a wash, no?)

MCM LeagueThe show takes place Tuesday, December 29th at 7pm at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy). Tickets are $15 (the show benefits the MCM League’s Crown Motel sign restoration project) Visit Mid-Century Modern League for details, including how to buy tickets.

December 12: Amnesia Winter Beer Festival 2009

December 9, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

amnesiawinterale2009Amnesia Brewing’s Second Annual Winter Ale Festival takes place this Saturday, December 12 from noon until 9pm at the brewery (832 N Beech).

Event proceeds benefit the Glen Hay Falconer Scholarship fund.

Last year $16 got you in, a souvenir mug, and four drink tickets. The festival featured beers from Caldera, Double Mountain, Laurelwood, Lucky Lab, Roots, Alameda, Salmon Creek, Walking Man, Rogue, Hopworks, Lompoc’s 5th Quadrand, and of course Amnesia presented an impressive array of holiday beers (see last year’s post for details).

That’s all I got . . . more when I know.
