March 22, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Timbers ArmyThe season opener is mere weeks away, which makes the Timbers Army First Thursday on April 1st the last one until the season ends.

Join us at The Bitter End and hang out with some fellow Portland Timbers fans! Chat about the latest Timbers news, enjoy a few pints, and possibly even find some Timbers or Timbers Army merchandise for sale.

As usual the gathering begins at 7:01pm at The Bitter End Pub (1981 W Burnside), and goes until they kick us all out!

Living The Life Portlandic

The Life PortlandicI am privileged this week to be a guest on The Life Portlandic on PDX.AM.

If you like this website, The Life Portlandic should be right up your alley; just read how the website describes it:

The Life Portlandic is about some of the good, cool, interesting and fun things about living in Portland, the state of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Each weekday, we dive into an optimistic look about what makes living here so special.

Tune in to PDX.AM at 9am on Wednesday and Thursday, March 24th and 25th to listen (or shortly after the broadcasts visit The Life Portlandic website or the iTunes page to download the podcasts). I’m venturing out to the Bull Mountain Studios Tuesday to sit down with host Doug Zanger to discuss the blog, La Vida Portlandic, and of course poutine!

Doug invites you to send any questions you’d like him to ask me to tlpdx@me.com or @Zanger on Twitter.

Let the Record Show

March 22, 2010 by Dave Knows 5 Comments

It was flattering to have my blog profiled in The Oregonian last week; Who’s up on the odd and offbeat? Dave knows . . ., but one small inaccuracy in the article stuck in my craw:

Strom, 39, who works for a software company doing something called quality assurance, always has been a natural tour guide for his friends and loved ones.

You see, the thing is, I’m only 38! This is a very important distinction because I like to think I’m in my late mid thirties. 39 would be late thirties, which I’m not quite ready to accept!

Fortunately the record has been corrected, as the highlighted text below shows:

March 26-28: Better Living Show

March 22, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Better Living ShowThe Better Living Show takes place at the Expo Center (2060 N Marine Drive) Friday through Sunday, March 26-28.

It’s basically a big huge home and garden and “lifestyle” show featuring organic gardening tips, vegan recipes, and other things (see all the featured sections here). There will be more exhibitors than you can shake a stick at, in addition to cooking demonstrations, authors taking about their books, various panel discussions, energy efficiency tips, and daily visits from the Oregon Zoo’s Predators of the Sky (full seminar schedule here).

The show runs Friday from noon until 9pm, Saturday from 11am to 9pm, and Sunday from 11am to 5pm. Admission is free, but parking costs $7 ($6 for carpools of 3 or more) – so take the Yellow Line Max instead!

Happy Corndog Day!

March 20, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Corn DogCorndog Day was invented by two dudes from Corvallis eighteen years ago when a 24 pack of corn dogs was discovered in their freezer while they were watching the first day of the NCAA basketball tournament (four basketball games in a row on the same channel!), thus saving them from the exhaustion of chips and soda.

(For more Corndog Day history, read the story from last year’s Oregonian: Corn dog lovers, it’s your day (thank two Corvallis guys)).

Now it’s a national secular holiday, with a website, a wikipedia page, and even corporate sponsors.

Though there are few officially sanctioned public events in the Portland area, don’t let that stop you from having a great Corndog Day; here are a few celebration alternatives for you: Brewpublicrawl, Farmers Market, the Timbers Army, and Corndog Day
