Portland Timbers Roundup (03/19/10)

March 19, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Portland TimbersThere’s a lot from Kip this week:

My trip to the Emerald City by Kip Kesgard at OregonLive.com

I’ve seen enough Portland and Seattle games in the NBA and WHL to know that there was a pretty good dislike between the teams, but there was something different in the matchups between the Timbers and Sounders. [More]

Timbers odds and ends – March 17th edition by Kip Kesgard at OregonLive.com

There’s plenty of other news to talk about with the Timbers besides their big win in Seattle this week. The team continues to sign more players to fortify their 2010 roster, while the business sides of USSF Division 2 and MLS make headlines with some management decisions. [More]

Soccer Primer Part 2 by Kip Kesgard at OregonLive.com

In ‘Part 1′ of the primer we talked a lot about the basics of soccer, and now I’ll discuss some nuances of the game including ball control, strategy, set pieces, penalty kicks and more rules. [More]

And now, in the non Kip Kesgard department:

We’re Going to Win The Everything by Bob Kellet at The Woodwork

Heading into Thursday’s exhibition match against the Seattle Sounders my biggest concern for the Portland Timbers was injury. I had this sinking fear that one or two of the players, who have only been training for a week and a half, would fall prey to the rivalry hype and try to do too much. It appears like there was victory on this front. [More]

In backup keeper Matt Pyzdrowski news :

Reaching his professional goals by Scott Schmid at Clarendon Hills Suburban Life

Hinsdale, IL – In the back of his mind, Matt Pyzdrowski has always believed he has what it takes to succeed at the professional level.

Now the Hinsdale native will get a chance to prove it.

Graduating from Marquette in December after being one of the top goalies in the Big East, the 23-year old signed Feb. 26 with the Portland Timbers of the U.S. Soccer Federation Division II Pro League. [More]

A new season-long blog with GK Matt Pyzdrowski at PortlandTimbers.com

Entering his first pro season in 2010, goalkeeper Matt Pyzdrowski will share his rookie experiences and thoughts throughout the season in a season-long blog, called “The Clean Sheet.” Get to know Matt in his first installment. [More]

And finally, some good old fashioned Timbers Tidbits:

  • A May 1st exhibition match has been announced: Costa Rica’s Puntarenas FC
  • Ten timbers matches will be broadcast live this year on FSN
  • Timbers MLS efforts shed light tangentially on MLS profits

Welcome Oregonian Readers!

Dave Knows in the OregonianMy blog is featured in an article by Peter Ames Carlin in today’s Oregonian: Who’s up on the odd and offbeat? Dave knows . . .

I like to think this encapsulation is spot on:

The Dave Knows site, a simply designed aggregation of listings, links to articles, a lengthy list of other Portland-centric blogs and more, serves as a guide to lesser known, if not necessarily offbeat events and places in and around the city.

[I do have one article correction, however: I’m only 38!]

If you’re new to the site, welcome! I invite you to peruse the category pull down menu to the right, browse the most recent blog posts on the homepage, and visit the calendar for things to do in Portland. The archive contains nearly three years of unconventional Portland adventures and events.

Also I recommend you take a gander at my gracious advertisers, and please visit the Network Sites further down on the right of this page; whether your interest is poutine, a place to watch a soccer match, or quirky stories about living in Portland.

Thanks for visiting!

Oh! And you can follow me on Twitter here: @DaveKnowsPDX, and for poutine news @PortlandPoutine

PDX.FM Founder Robert Wagner on Redoing Media

March 18, 2010 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Redoing MediaBetsy Richter interviews Robert Wagner today on Redoing Media, the show that explores how all of us are becoming shape/time/media shifters instead of passive consumers of media.

While Mr. Wagner continues to protest his inclusion in this merry local media dance we’re playing here & does his best to play the ‘aw, shucks’ card when pressed, I very strongly beg to differ. The guy makes media — even though he doesn’t want that Oregonian article preserved in wood plaque form any time soon. He reports on news every morning on Portland Sucks (raise your hand if you’ve heard of an issue for the very first time while listening to Robert & Sabrina on Portland Sucks each morning at 8 am). He’s building out a whole infrastructure to support local Portland news, information & entertainment — that sounds like a media magnate to me, right? And he’s funding the whole thing out of his own pocket.

Betsy promises not to go easy on him. This should be a very interesting interview.

Redoing Media airs at 1pm Thursdays on PDX.FM, or listen to the podcast afterwards anytime.

Happy St. Unicorn’s Day!

Unicorned Beef

On St Unicorn’s Day, we drink to remember, instead of our usual reason, drinking to forget.

With these inspirational words from esteemed film director Mike Vogel, I wish you a fantastic St. Unicorn’s Day.

Naturally Portland is a hot bed of unicornaphilia. Evidence suggests that it is not merely legend that this great city was built upon an ancient unicorn burial ground. In Mike Vogel’s treatise on St. Unicorn’s Day, he has confirmed there are archeological bones and horns in dirt type of evidence.

Besides drinking to remember, it is traditional also to feast on [uni]corned beef and boiled cabbage and root vegetables on this day (if some of this sounds familiar, it is because, like so many religious holidays, St. Patrick’s Day is actually based on an old pagan celebration: St. Unicorn’s Day). Once again this year, Heather and I have made our own [uni]corned beef, but you’re in luck too if you stop by plenty of other places around town.

I invite you to share your St. Unicorn’s Day traditions, musings and reflections below!

And once again, to all Portlanders everywhere, I wish you a fantastic St. Unicorn’s Day.
