April 7, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Grassroot SoccerAs the kickoff to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa approaches, Portland based relief organization Mercy Corps is teaming up with Grassroot Soccer, an organization dedicated to Using the Power of Soccer in the Fight Against HIV and AIDS.

On Thursday, April 8th at 12:30pm Matt Streng, who has worked with both organizations, will speak about the partnership and programs at the Mercy Corps Action Center (28 SW 1st).

Matt joined Mercy Corps in 2006 as a Program Manager in Sudan, he has worked on the TSU Health Unit in Portland, and is currently based in South Africa.

Today Literary Arts and Trimet launch the 2010 edition of Poetry in Motion with a 10:30am celebration at Antoinette Hatfield Hall (the PCPA rotunda) at 1111 SW Broadway.

Remember those poems you helped select back in January? Three of those were selected, in addition to three by Oregon Book Awards finalists and two by Portland Public high school students in Literary Arts’ Writers in Schools program (see the placards here).

Visit the Hard Drive blog for more information, including a contest: TriMet revives Poetry in Motion, asks for ‘dirty words’ haikus

Hall of Records is Almost Here

Chalkboard of Hall of RecordsWhat was once the Pantorium (and more recently half of It’s A Beautiful Pizza) is well on its way to becoming SE Belmont’s newest boutique vinyl shop, coffeehouse & bar: Hall of Records.

Our friends Justin and Katie have been working on the idea for several years. In February they secured a location and began building out the actual bar.

Located at 3342 SE Belmont, Justin and Katie and friends have been doing everything; dealing with vendors, perusing lighting choices, constructing tables, painting, and selecting dishes. And most recently, as you can see in the photo on the right, working on their chalkboard menu.

The grand opening is approaching (I’ll keep you posted!). Follow Katie and Justin and friends’ efforts at the Hall of Records blog, and visit Justin’s Dusty Nuggets music blog for soulfunkjazz world/breaks 45s and random heat. For the latest updates fast, join the mailing list and become a friend of the bar on Facebook.

Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (04/06/2010)

April 6, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersSince we last talked, the Timbers visited Kitsap County, Washington. I happened to be just across some body of water (I can’t keep them straight) from the island, but didn’t make it to the match. The ferry would not have been near as epic as the bus trip anyway.

At The Woodwork, before the match, Bob Kellet explained We Go to Exotic Lands to Conquer, though that wasn’t what ultimately happened (Timbers lost 3-2). But if you haven’t already read the article by Bob, you should. Besides extolling the mysticism of Kitsap, he also analyses the Timbers forwards situation this year; Keita, Josten, DeMartin, and as yet unsigned talents, Obatola and Dike. Ponders Oregon’s soccer talent export economy, and shares some old man history – including a link to and story from the Tails From the Shed archive!

At the Portland Timbers USL USSF II Blog on The Offside, Mao takes a look at the recent Purdy signing, the unfortunate result in Bremerton, and points us to Dropping Timber‘s Fantasy Football Contest.

The contest rules are simple: pick a team made up of three Timbers, as well as make some predictions about the season. Your players, and guessing correctly, will score you fantasy points. Sign up here. The winner will receive bragging rights (of course), and also a to be determined prize (most likely of the custom jersey variety).

Dave Goes: Seattle

April 5, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Seattle PoutineWe were on a couple missions. Heather needed to try on a dress for her sister’s wedding, and I needed to try on some Seattle poutine.

Missions accomplished.

I’ve only been up to Seattle three times in my entire life. On this trip I saw more of Seattle (and environs) than I had seen cumulatively in all previous trips. This was possible due to our gracious tour guides, Brent and Lesley. Brent is a Portlander, but is living in Seattle for the time being for work. Lesley is his fiance, and though she too lives in Portland, she visits Brent, and Seattle, often. Places they showed us on this trip include Fremont Brewing, Snoqualmie Falls, and Vashon Island.

Our poutine craving was sated at The Traveler Pub. (Read the account of our visit at Portland Poutine.
