Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (06/01/2010)

June 1, 2010 by Dave Leave a Comment

TimbersWhew, the Portland Timbers finally won a game, against Boca Juniors(!) no less! Let’s hope Saturday’s match boosted the team’s confidence. Sure, it was a friendly, but what a relief to the fans, and probably to the players as well. And what a game! Boca Juniors didn’t play Riquelme, but they fielded an entertaining squad. I like to see teams send the occasional shot in from 20 yards out.

Bright Dike played an impressive match for the Timbers – he’s strong, quick, and slippery. And Rodrigo Lopez played well under pressure – he may be what what this team needs on set pieces. (I love Ryan Pore‘s game in most regards – he’s clearly our best finisher and one of the top playmakers – but he has a tendency to send free kicks low into the wall.)

Next up in USSF Division 2 play for the Timbers is Carolina, who visit PGE Park on Saturday, June 6th.  The first 2000 fans through the turnstile receive a Timbers fleece blanket, which will come in handy if the weather hasn’t improved by then.

Blog recommendations:

Throw Ins, a newish blog about the Timbers by veteran Timbers fan Drumman, is a must read if you’re interested in the club’s history. Recent blog include newspaper clippings from the 1970s and 80s about the NASL Timbers.

And A Pretty Move, a quality soccer blog covering world soccer and the Portland Timbers has returned – just in time for the 2010 World Cup.

And don’t forget to come out to Studio 20 on June 5th with your Timbers ephemera to make history!
