July 17: Portland Highland Games 2010

As if there weren’t already enough things to do this weekend, the 2010 Portland Highland Games take place Saturday, July 17th at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon.

Spend the day among the Scots! The tradition returns and we invite you, your family and friends to join us for traditional Scottish entertainment and fun.

What will you enjoy at the Games?

Scottish dancing; piping, drumming, and fiddling competitions; athletic competitions; musical entertainment; traditional food and shopping; children’s activities; clan tents and more!

And this year, we’re thrilled that our featured guest pipe band is the six-time and reigning world champions, the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band from Vancouver, Canada. They’ll play on our field just a few weeks before heading to Scotland to defend their title!

Every third Friday of the month the Blue Monk (3341 SE Belmont) hosts the Offbeat Belly Dance collective, a club rocking, good timing, genre-defying gang of badass belly dancers.

And this third Friday, July 16 2010 is no different – the Offbeat Belly Dance collectives invites you to Offbeat Belly Dance! This Friday! Free Show! ZOMG!

And truly – this month! Oh lordy, good folk. This month we can haz a fabulous lineup. You simply must join us, to partake of the awesomeness of….

Mississippi Avenue Street Fair 2010

The 2010 Mississippi Avenue Street Fair took place Saturday, July 10th. Heather and I made the rounds (as we did in 2009 and 2008!)

No Future home of Starbucks prank this year, Mississippi Records‘ front porch hosted work from the Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative.

Most of the vendors were standard Portland Street Fair fare.

Non-profits, like Friends of Trees were manning booths too.

Mr. Green Beans, a new Mississippi Avenue do-it-yourself coffee roastery, isn’t quite open yet, but they set up a booth to introduce themselves to the neighborhood. (As a childhood fan of Captain Kangaroo, I’m already a fan!)

Lots of bands signed up.

And of course there was lots of delicious grub!

Holy shit there’s a lot to do this weekend! Usually I publish this weekend roundup post on Thursday, but I really think we all need some extra time this week to make our weekend plans. We have multiple beer, music, and street fair events, in addition to a Timbers match and the July Sunday Parkways.

Unicorn Pub Crawl 2010

The first annual PDX.FM Unicorn Pub Crawl takes place Friday, July 16th on North Mississippi Avenue.

2010 Cathedral Park Jazz Festival

The 30th annual Cathedral Park Jazz Festival takes place July 16th through 18th at Cathedral Park, under the St. Johns Bridge.

Performers this year include Linda Hornbuckle, Lloyd Jones, Thara Memory, and the Bobby Torres Ensemble. [more]

Portland International Beerfest 2010

It’s a weekend in July, so of course there’s a beer fest: the Portland International Beer Festival starts Friday, July 16th and continues through Sunday, July 18th (Friday 4pm-10pm, Saturday 12pm-10pm, Sunday 12pm-7pm). [more]

The Big Busk 2010

The Big Busk 2010 takes place Saturday, July 17th in downtown Portland. What exactly is the Big Busk?

Woodstock Festival and Parade 2010

The 2010 Woodstock Festival and Parade takes place Saturday, July 17th, and features a day of fun, frivolity and music for the Woodstock neighborhood from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. . . .

The Bee reports that “all the fun is on Woodstock Boulevard from S.E. 41st eastward; the parade forms at Our Lady of Sorrows at S.E. 52nd at Woodstock Boulevard, and travels west to the disband area near All Saints’ Episcopal Church.” [more]

Pix Patisserie’s 2010 Bastille Day Celebration

The North Portland Pix Patisserie (3901 N Williams) is throwing a Bastille Day Celebration, Saturday, July 17th. . . .

Pix will, of course, be offering french pastries. Next door neighbors Fifth Quardrant will be hosting a beer garden, there will also be ice cream, a 60 pound Carlton Farms roasted pig, and a Champagne and Oyster Bar! [more]

Portland Timbers vs Manchester City

Our humble Portland Timbers of the USSF division 2 face one of the richest football clubs in the world, Manchester City of the English Premier League this Saturday, July 17th 2010.

The 31 man traveling roster for Manchester City includes three players who represented their countries in the 2010 World Cup finals: Shaun Wright-Phillips (England), Kolo Toure and midfielder Yaya Toure (Ivory Coast). [more]

East Portland Sunday Parkways

The third Sunday Parkways of 2010 takes place this Sunday, July 18th in East Portland. Take the opportunity to spend a pleasant summery Sunday morning and afternoon (10am to 3pm) winding your way on bike or foot through the mostly residential, car free, streets of East Portland. The routes take you from one park to the next, where you can check out the vendors and demonstrations, or just sit down and relax. [more]

Ramona Street Fair 2010

The second annual Ramona Street Fair takes place Sunday, July 18th.

“The event features food, music, craft vendors and information booths. It also links the I-205 path — which is open for cyclists and pedestrians — to the Lents International Farmers Market and the Lents Town Center commercial district.” [more]

July 22-25: Oregon Brewers Festival 2010

The 23rd annual Oregon Brewers Festival takes place July 22nd through 25th at Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

The beer list is impressive. For one thing only 25% of the beers fall into the IPA style, which is pretty low by Oregon beer festival standards. It’s nice to see more belgian and farmhouse style ales, plus plenty of wheat beers.

This is the Big One. Year after year it gets bigger, more crowded, and the good beers run out too damn early. My advice is to arrive early, try the unique beers not normally available in Portland, and then leave early and make your way to one of the many bars and taverns around town with fantastic beers and 16-20 ounce pints. If you enjoy the heat and crowds, by all means go Saturday afternoon, but don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Taps open at noon each day of the festival and pour until 9pm Thursday through Saturday. Sunday you’re cut off at 7pm. Standard beer fest conventions apply: buy the festival mug and $1 tokens for beer samples. $10 gets you a mug, a program, and four tokens. Visit the website for more information.
