Cathedral Park Jazz FestivalThe 30th annual Cathedral Park Jazz Festival takes place July 16th through 18th at Cathedral Park, under the St. Johns Bridge.

Performers this year include Linda Hornbuckle, Lloyd Jones, Thara Memory, and the Bobby Torres Ensemble.

In its 30th year, this is the largest and oldest free jazz and blues festival west of the Mississippi. Portland jazz station, KHMD simulcasts the entire twenty or so hours of the festival, but of course it’s best seen, and listened to live.

Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (07/13/2010)

July 13, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersI don’t know about you, but I’m suffering from a bit of a soccer hangover. I was feeling pretty good through Saturday – the World Cup Final third place match was a delight, and then the Portland Timbers put together a nice match in the evening, a 2-0 victory over Miami.

Then Sunday, the Timbers U-23s clinched the Northwest Division title, and the Timbers friendly against Atlas looks like it might have been fun. But there was no way I could make it up to PGE Park – the World Cup Final, earlier in the day, was hard to stomach (oh yeah, and I also had attended my buddy Brent’s bachelor party Saturday night).

The Portland Timbers don’t return to PGE Park until August 11th, when they host Minnesota. They play four league matches on the road before then, starting with Vancouver on July 22nd.

But there’s one more home match before the road trip commences. It’s not at PGE Park though; the Portland Timbers face Manchester City at Merlo field Saturday, July 17th. Preview soon . . .

Lents Ramona Street FairThe second annual Ramona Street Fair takes place Sunday, July 18th.

The event features food, music, craft vendors and information booths. It also links the I-205 path — which is open for cyclists and pedestrians — to the Lents International Farmers Market and the Lents Town Center commercial district.

Sponsored by the Lents Neighborhood Association, and planned in conjunction with the East Portland Sunday Parkways, the fair runs from 10am to 6pm, and takes place on the Ramona cul-de-sac at 92nd (next to Lents Town Center/Foster Road Max station).

July 16-18: Portland International Beerfest 2010

July 12, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Portland International BeerfestIt’s a weekend in July, so of course there’s a beer fest: the Portland International Beer Festival starts Friday, July 16th and continues through Sunday, July 18th (Friday 4pm-10pm, Saturday 12pm-10pm, Sunday 12pm-7pm).

This is the expensive one: $25 at the gate for 10 beer tickets and an official glass ($20 if you buy tickets in advance). It takes place up in the the North Park blocks between Davis and Everett. (Don’t confuse this beer fest with the BIG one, which takes place the following weekend, July 22-25th, at Waterfront Park).

The beer selection at this festival is impressive – well over a hundred beers, draft and bottled, from all over the world, with a few ciders and meads thrown in. And though the entry fee is steep, if you hang onto your wristband and glass, you’re welcome back all weekend.
