July 18: East Portland Sunday Parkways

July 12, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Sunday ParkwaysThe third Sunday Parkways of 2010 takes place this Sunday, July 18th in East Portland.

Take the opportunity to spend a pleasant summery Sunday morning and afternoon (10am to 3pm) winding your way on bike or foot through the mostly residential, car free, streets of East Portland. The routes take you from one park to the next, where you can check out the vendors and demonstrations, or just sit down and relax. This weekend’s event connects Ed Benedict (and the East Portland Exposition), Bloomington and Lents Parks, plus the I-205 and Springwater multi-use paths.

Heather and I enjoyed the North Portland Sunday Parkways last month. We walked the very first one in North Portland in 2008, and last year we rode bikes in the Southeast Portland event.

Oregon Boquerones

On a recent trip to Astoria, Heather and I had dinner at Bridgewater Bistro, a great restaurant in a beautiful setting on the water, in the shadow of the iconic Astoria-Megler Bridge.

One menu option was a pleasant surprise:

Anchovy Boquerones 7 *
– an Astoria version of a classic spanish tapa –
local fish lightly cured in vinegar, oil, garlic and herbs; served with cucumber relish and crostini

After the glorious poutine, of course, boquerones are my favorite snack, but like poutine it is a rare occurrence that you’ll find them on a Portland menu. The local boquerones served up at Bridgewater Bistro were delicious, and to my palate indistinguishable from the imported ones I’d tried before.

BoqueronesIf you’ve never tried boquerones en vinagre, but are familiar with the fishiness of sardines or canned anchovies, you’re in for a surprise. The fish flavor is far less intense in a boquerone. The taste of the tiny fish filets has more in common with ceviche, I should think, than the anchovies most avoid on pizzas or a caesar salad. A fresh vinegar tartness prevails, the texture of the fish flesh is almost like fresh. Slap a couple on top of a piece of toast, or eat them from the end of a toothpick. They’re good. Especially with a cold crisp beer.

Two years ago my roommate and I hosted a Spanish themed dinner party. We made toasts with mushrooms and alioli, Spanish potato salad, and of course a paella. It was while researching these recipes that I first came across a description of boquerones. I was intrigued. I like sardines, and I use anchovies, the oily and extraordinarily fishy kind, in recipes whenever it makes sense. But I figured it’d be too difficult to find the ingredients to prepare my own boquerones. So imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon Spanish boquerones at New Seasons. I bought some and served them up at the party. They were a delicious hit.

And now, as evidenced by the menu entry at the Bridgewater Bistro, we have a local option. Recently the Daily Astoria ran a pair of articles about the nascent domestic boquerones.

  • Astoria fish processor makes a splash in anchovy market
  • ‘They’re so different – they’re not the fishy, slimy critters that go in Caesar salad’

Astoria Pacific Seafoods‘ anchovies are available in Astoria at both the Bridgewater Bistro and Fulio’s Pastaria. In Portland they can be found on the menu at Clarklewis and at Whole Foods.

Where Will You Watch the 2010 World Cup Final?

July 11, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

I’m a bit hungover, so I’m thinking I might stay in my pajamas all day and watch the World Cup Final at home on Univision.com.

But if you’re feeling less under the weather, you have lots of World Cup Viewing options in Portland.

Netherlands vs Spain kicks off at 11:30am. You can watch it at Pioneer Courthouse Square, free, with thousands of other Portlanders on a huge (17′ x 23′!) LED screen – and there’s a beer garden! If you’d rather watch the match in a more intimate (and cooler!) environ, visit Portland Soccer Bars to find the perfect cafe, restaurant, pub, or bar.

And then to complete your Portland soccer weekend, after the World Cup Final head up to PGE Park. The Portland Timbers U-23s face the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency team at 2pm! Then at 6pm the Portland Timbers host Mexican side Club Deportivo Atlas in a friendly.

July 17: Pix Patisserie’s 2010 Bastille Day Celebration

July 11, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

PixThe North Portland Pix Patisserie (3901 N Williams) is throwing a Bastille Day Celebration, Saturday, July 17th.

To celebrate the storming of the Bastille prison in 1789 which spurred the French Revolution (and to have a little fun at the same time) Pix is holding a day/night long block party in front of its North Williams location. Come for live music from local bands like Nice Nice and Dirty Mittens, a wine drinking 5K, Champagne sabering demo, dance off, and more. Did I mention the giant Bastille Tower made of cream puffs? Yes, you get to eat it!

Pix will, of course, be offering french pastries. Next door neighbors Fifth Quardrant will be hosting a beer garden, there will also be ice cream, a 60 pound Carlton Farms roasted pig, and a Champagne and Oyster Bar!

The festivities go from 11am until Midnight. Visit the Pix News and Events page for a schedule and details.

Entry is free! But bring a couple cans or boxes of non-perishable food items for the Oregon Food Bank and receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win gift certificates to Portland restaurants. The more items you donate, the more tickets you receive. 100 gift certificates will be raffled off.

July 17: The Big Busk 2010

July 10, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Big Busk 2010The Big Busk 2010 takes place Saturday, July 17th in downtown Portland. What exactly is the Big Busk?

The Big Busk is a new music festival for downtown Portland.

These are the ingredients:

* a deep and diverse pool of creative and talented musicians
* a beautiful, human-friendly downtown that consistently ranks among the most walkable in the nation
* a really crappy economy

The idea is, for an entire afternoon, to saturate downtown with music. All kinds of music. Up and down Broadway, the transit mall, the park blocks to the esplanade.

There is no stage, but every corner is a stage. There is no audience, but everyone is the audience. There is no admission fee, but we trust attendees tip generously.

So it’s kind of an experiment. It’s also kind of an art project and a tongue-in-cheek celebration of creative defiance. Good music for tough times.

Visit the Big Busk website for information on locations, times, and the over two dozen bands and performers that plan to take part. And drop by the Big Busk page on Kickstarter to donate money towards tipping the performers!
