Match Day 08/26/2010: Portland Timbers vs Austin Aztex

August 26, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersThe Austin Aztex and their league leading offense visit PGE Park to take on the Portland Timbers – kickoff is at 7pm.

Preceding the game at 5pm is the Jimmy Conway testimonial match. Gates open at 4:30pm.

In June the Timbers and Aztex played to a 0-0 draw – an impressive result for Portland’s defense, as Austin average almost 2 goals a match. The Aztex have only lost twice since that match. The Timbers continue to struggle to score goals, but are riding a two game winning streak into the match.

History PubCelebrate the 25th anniversary of the Oregon’s Brewpub Law at a special History Pub at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne).

The evening begins with A History of Hoptopia, an overview of the Willamette Valley’s hop culture, presented by historian Peter A. Kopp of the University of Nevada, Reno.

After Kopp’s overview, a panel of experts on Northwest beer will discuss the 1985 Oregon Brewpub Law and Oregon beer culture.

The panel includes:

Portland Brewing founders Fred Bowman and Art Larrance
Microbrew legend Fred Eckhardt
Tom Mason (the Oregon House representative who sponsored the original brewpub law)
Judge William Snouffer (who made a key ruling that opened the door for the original brewpub law)
Bridgeport Brewing founder Dick Ponzi
Brian and Mike McMenamin
Beer writer John Foyston will emcee

Finally, the OPB documentary Beervana will be shown, and a keg or two of Liquidator Stout, derived from McMenamins’ 1985 era Liquidator Porter, will be tapped.

Show starts at 7pm. Entry is free, and canned food donations to Oregon Food Bank are welcome. Film screening is 21 and over only.

Oregon State Fair 2010

August 25, 2010 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Oregon State FairThe 2010 Oregon State Fair extends from Friday, August 27 through September 6, at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem.

Competitions at the fair include 4-H of course, along with categories such as fine art, farm and garden, photography, floral, creative living, and grill offs. Competitions also include horse shows, and exhibits of livestock and the best part: small animals.

Entertainment includes carnival rides and magic shows, animal shows, and five stages of music, including.

Food is provided by 75 food booths and stands, with all the traditional fair goodies like curly fries, corn dogs, snow cones, cotton candy, etc. Rogue Brewery is sponsoring a Roof Top Pub, where I will probably spend much of my time at the fair, and there’s also a Wine Cellar and Patio.

Amazingly, I have never attended the state fair, but we had so much fun at the Multnomah County Fair this year, that Heather and I have decided it’s a can’t miss event.

Admission and hours vary wildly depending on days you attend, number of days you plan to attend, your age, whether you buy tickets in advance or at the gate, so visit the Oregon State Fair website for details (also check out special days and discounts).
