The Dill Pickle Club presents “WALLS OF PRIDE” Nov.12th Portland, Oregon from In The Can Productions on Vimeo.
The Dill Pickle Club presents Walls of Pride, a Tour of African American Public Art in Portland, this Friday, November 12. The tour goes by bus!
Walls of Heritage Committee, Mallory Avenue Community Enrichment and the Dill Pickle Club proudly partner to present Walls of Pride, a tour celebrating Portland’s African American public art. Tour participants will have the opportunity to experience approximately a dozen murals and other works of public art in their North and Northeast Portland community context, including pieces by: Adriene Cruz, Henry Frison, Lewis Harris, Charlotte Lewis, Isaka Shamsud-Din, Charles Tatum and Clifford Walker. Two of the featured artists, Adriene Cruz and Isaka Shamsud-Din, will be guest speakers at the sites of their work.
Portland’s African American murals have a little acknowledged lineage that is inseparable from the history of the Albina district. The Albina Mural Project, completed as a Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA) project in 1977 by 7 artists of color, featured 5 murals with themes of civil rights and African history. By the 1980s the murals were weather damaged and removed. Today, African American artists are still much under-represented in Portland’s galleries and museums.
Visit the Dill Pickle Club event page for more information, including how to get tickets.
Portland Timbers defender Scot Thompson announced his retirement from professional soccer last night at a special event held at Kell’s Irish Pub in Portland. Scott played for the Timbers from 2004 through 2010, racking up 156 regular-season matches and 12,994 minutes on the field.
Team president and owner Merritt Paulson, joined by technical director and former coach and player Gavin Wilkinson each spoke to the gathered fans, players, and media; praising Scot’s history of hard work, dedication to the team and organization, and his impressive pace on the pitch. They presented Scot with a framed jersey and Scot spoke briefly about how much he’s enjoyed the past seven years as a Timber and finding himself part of the community.

TriMet Diaries, a new site for sharing the inevitably amusing, amazing, and horrifying tales gleaned by riding public transit in the Portland metropolitan area, has launched!
I was inspired to create the site after I stumbled upon Muni Diaries, which bills itself as a place to share and read rider tales and news about the sometimes crappy, sometimes efficient, but essential public-transit system of San Francisco. I could relate, and I was delighted by the stories and photographs submitted by San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) riders.
Portland metro area transit riders already have available a surprising variety of transit blogs and websites, including the excellent (and recommended) Portland Afoot, PDX’s 10-minute newsmagazine on buses, bikes & low-car life, which encompasses a magazine, a blog, and a wiki. The Portland Afoot magazine sports a regular feature called Only On The Bus, where riders write in with their favorite bus stories. TriMet Diaries aspires to be a similar venue.
I invite you to stop by and peruse the (evolving) website, and please contribute if you have a story to share.
Follow TriMet Diaries on Twitter for the latest updates and stories.
