OMSI Science Pub, Special First Thursday Edition (7-April-2011)

April 5, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Omsi Science PubIn a special First Thursday OMSI Science Pub, award-winning science writer Rebecca Skloot presents the story covered in her new book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

Doctors took her cells without asking. Those cells never died. They launched a medical revolution and a multimillion-dollar industry. More than twenty years later, her children found out. Their lives would never be the same.

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more. Henrietta’s cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can’t afford health insurance.

This science pub takes place at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne) from 7pm until 9pm on Thursday, April 7, 2011. Doors open at 5pm so you have plenty of time to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! The suggested donation is $3.00. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.

April 5, 1972: Portland and Vancouver Tornado Cuts a Deadly Swath

April 5, 2011 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

The Oregonian front page, April 6, 1972On April 5, 1972 a spring thunderstorm’s high winds damaged a lumber warehouse in Tigard. As the storm traveled northeast across town, it broke branches and uprooted trees, and spawned a tornado.

The tornado first touched down on the banks of the Columbia River, damaging four boats moored off the 3300 block of NE Marine Drive. Dozens of cabin cruisers were tossed about. A dry dock, boat houses and other buildings were damaged before the funnel cloud made it to open water and proceeded across the river, where the real damage began.

On April 6, 1972 The Oregonian tallied the damage:

Worst hit was the Waremart discount store on NE 72nd Avenue and Fourth Plain Boulevard, where five persons were killed . . .

The Sunrise Bowling Lanes, across the street from Waremart, was smashed flat, killing Mrs. Sharon Lucille Graser, 30, of 2510 NE 83rd St., Vancouver, as she worked in the Nursery.

Peter Skene Ogden Elementary School at 2212 NE 65th Ave. received the full fury of the wind, but the roof was torn off and scattered northward, miraculously sparing the lives of all 541 students and 21 teachers in their busy classrooms.

The 1972 Portland/Vancouver tornado was the most devastating tornado in Oregon’s recorded weather history. Six people were killed and over 300 were injured.

Video Interlude: PDX Timelapse – Last week of March 2011

Local filmmaker Mike Vogel is enjoying his new iPhone’s HD video and editing capabilities:

The music for this timelapse is by Trevor Bennett, who scored “Did You Kiss Anyone?” This song is used in the movie and I’ve listened to it a lot the past year or so. Portland plays a big part of the movie. Not so much in the plot or narrative, but especially in how the movie was made. So to me, the music and video are a perfect match.

Dave Goes . . .

Astoria!Heather and I are moving to Astoria!

I put in my notice at my day job last week – my last day will be in early May, and by June we except we’ll be living somewhere above downtown Astoria with a view of the Columbia.

That’s the plan anyway.

We don’t have new jobs lined up. Well, jobs in the traditional sense. Between developing Dork Face Media, running PDX Web Ads, blogging and tweeting, we’ll be busy enough.

But really our plan is to largely take the summer off and discover more of what the North Coast has to offer. With the Astoria Bicentennial celebration taking place all summer long, the place will be especially thick with fun activities. But also, we just want to relax and enjoy the town (Blue Scorcher, Fort George Brewery, and daily walkabouts; we’re looking in your direction).

So that’s the “plan,” if it really qualifies as such.

But don’t worry, Dave Knows Portland is not going anywhere. In fact I’ll have more time to spend on the site this summer than ever before. Plus we’ll be in Portland a lot during the summer – for weddings, Timbers games, and business. I’ve got some new plans for the site percolating too, which I’ll share in due time . . .

Heather has more details on this big announcement at Mile73.com, including FAQs!
