April 4, 1906: Women’s Suffrage Conference Takes Place in Portland

A conference on Suffrage held in Portland on April 4, 1906 attracted many prominent suffragists, including Abigail Scott Duniway, who addressed the group on the topic of “Marching on to Victory.”

Scores of suffragists from throughout the state gathered, preparing for the June 1906 election when they hoped to gain the legal right to vote. Alas, the cause garnered only 44% of the vote that year. They would have to wait until 1912, when Oregon would finally join its neighboring states in permitting women to vote.

Why Everyone (Else) Is a Hypocrite is the topic of the latest OMSI Science Pub, which takes place on Monday, April 4, 2011:

Do you wonder why people are so inconsistent? Why people often seem to contradict themselves? Why they believe things they know aren’t true? Why they say “don’t do X” and then do that very thing? This presentation, grounded in evolutionary psychology, explains why. The reason is that the human mind is “modular,” made up of a large number of parts with different functions. Sometimes these parts conflict with one another. The poet Walt Whitman once wrote, “I am large; I contain multitudes.” Robert Kurzban argues that Whitman was right. We all contain multitudes (of modules), which makes us all inconsistent. Or, at least, it makes everyone (else) inconsistent.

The presenter is Robert Kurzban, author of the book, Why Everyone (Else) Is a Hypocrite: Evolution and the Modular Mind, and an associate professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Pennsylvania.

This science pub takes place at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne) from 7pm until 9pm, but arrive early (5pm doors open) to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $3.00 suggested donation/cover charge. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.

What the Timbers Saw – Art Celebrating the Portland Timbers (7-April-2011)

Join local artists Neil Perry and Susannah Kelly this First Thursday, April 7, 2011, for What the Timbers Saw – Art Celebrating the Portland Timbers.

My favorite thing about attending Timbers games is the sense of camaraderie among the crowd, there is a real sense of community and that is something to be proud of’’ said co-curator and artist Susannah Kelly . . .

Co-curator Neil Perry said: “My re-location to Portland from the UK was largely down to two things: the internationally renowned art community and some very good friends, members of the Timbers Army, who I met when they visited Sunderland to watch my team play in 2006. It’s an honor to be able to bring these two passionate cultures closer together.”

Works by Timber Jim, amongst many others, will be on display and available for sale. For a list of all the artists visit the Facebook event page.

The Bitter End Pub (1981 W. Burnside) is the place, starting at 7pm. 30% of sales (100% of Timber Jim’s and his granddaughter’s art, which will be auctioned off) will be donated to “Operation Pitch Invasion,” a local charity dedicated to repairing and maintaining soccer fields in Portland.

April 3, 1893: City of Mt. Angel Incorporated

The city of Mt. Angel, best known for throwing Oregon’s largest Oktoberfest, was incorporated on April 3, 1893.

White settlers began arriving in the area about 40 years earlier. In 1891 a group of Benedictines arrived and started an abbey on the hill, which they christened Mount Angel (the translation of Engelberg, the location of their home-abbey in Switzerland).

In 2009 the Oktoberfest (a tradition in the small town since 1966), was joined by an winter festival: Wurstfest – a celebration of the mighty German (wurst) sausage.

Kitchen Revival Tour (16-April-2011)

The Kitchen Revival Tour returns for 2011! One of the most popular Architectural Heritage Center events, the 13th annual tour takes place Saturday, April 16th from 10am to 4pm.

Check out a variety of period and renovated kitchens from the 1900 to the 1950s.

Included on this year’s tour are two homes designed by local builder Ken Birkemeier and an amazing intact “streamline” house from 1950.

Along the way you will learn that even the oldest of kitchens can be adapted to meet 21st century lifestyles. In some instances, there may even be little or nothing to change at all. You’ll also see the fine work of local craftsmen and meet homeowners who truly reflect the AHC mission of educating people to preserve our building heritage.
