Match Day (25-May-2011): Portland Timbers vs. AFC Ajax

May 25, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Portland TimbersThe Portland Timbers host AFC Ajax, one of the most storied teams in Europe, tonight at Jeld-Wen Field. Kick off is at 7pm.

Most of the roster of the team that just won their 30th Dutch league title are making the trip, including top scorers Miralem Sulejmani and Siem de Jong. Both Ajax and the Timbers, no doubt, will substitute liberally – should be an entertaining match and a chance to see some of the up-and-comers from both teams.

May 25, 1972: Oregon’s Tallest Building Dedicated

May 25, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Wells Fargo CenterThe 40-story Wells Fargo Tower in downtown Portland was the tallest building in Oregon when it was dedicated on May 25, 1972 (The Oregonian, 26-May-1972). It is still the tallest building in Oregon.*

Originally called the First National Center, the Charles Luckman Associates-designed building was constructed for $40 million dollars. When it opened the first 21 floors, plus the five stories of the adjacent (via sky bridge) data processing plant building, were occupied by the First National Bank (about 1500 employees at the time). Bank president Ralph J. Voss and Governor Tom McCall spoke at the dedication ceremony.

* Though often touted as such (notably by Chuck Palahniuk in Fugitives and Refugees), the US Bankcorp Tower, aka Big Pink, is not the tallest building in Portland. It’s #2, about 10 feet shorter than the Wells Fargo Tower. Big Pink does, however, have more stories, and certainly appears taller as it’s immediately surrounded by shorter buildings.

Fleur de Lethal Cinematheque Presents: Pee Wee’s Big Adventure (May 28-29, 2011)

May 24, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

3rd Annual Pee Wee's BIG WeekendThe third annual Pee Wee’s BIG Weekend takes place Saturday and Sunday, May 28 and 29, 2011 at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne).

Portlanders love certain things: movies, beer and dressing in silly costumes to name a few. But the bicycle – oh the bicycle – how we love the bicycle!

It is with this love of bicycles in mind that Fleur de Lethal Cinematheque presents this annual celebration of the film Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.

In keeping with tradition we provide 2 screenings – A late night for big kids and a family friendly matinee.

As with all Fleur de Lethal screenings the movie is only HALF the show!

This time, bust out your gray suits and Amazing Larry Hawaiian shirts to enter our costume contest and limber up your toes for the “tequila” dance off!!

This screening goes out to the kids, the kid in all of us and the willingness to go to the end of the earth for something you love . . . especially your bike.

The Late Night Big Kid Screening (21 and over only) is Saturday. Doors open at 9pm, dance and costume contest starts at 9:45pm, and the film begins at 10pm. Admission is only $5!

The All Ages Family Friendly Matinee takes place Sunday afternoon. Doors open at noon, costume parade goes down at 12:45pm, and screening starts at 1pm. Kids under 12 get in for a mere $1, and everyone else for $3.

For more details, visit www.FleurDeLethal.com, or the Facebook fan page.
