Scandinavian Midsummer Festival (25-June-2011)

June 21, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

The 83rd annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival takes place on June 25, 2011 at Portland’s Oaks Park.

Scandinavians have a long tradition of celebrating the Summer Solstice with bonfires or raising of the Maypole (Majstång). Here in Portland that tradition has been celebrated for 83 continuous years at the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival.

Midsummer in Scandinavia’s northern climate is the biggest coming out celebration of the year and everyone is invited. At Portland’s Scandinavian Midsummer Festival, it is a celebration of fertile fields, warmer and longer days with games, dancing, food, Scandinavian crafts and of course the raising of the Maypole.

However, Scandinavian roots are not required to celebrate at this summer solstice festival. As all people of Nordic descent know, it’s always a fun, family friendly and important day with century old traditions.

The festival runs from 11am until 9pm. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for kids (6-12), and $15 for families (2 adults, 2 kids). Two stages feature live music (acts include Maiastra, whose performance we enjoyed last weekend in Astoria), vendors will be offering their wares, there will be dancing (6pm-9pm), and there’s a beer garden (open noon until 8pm)! The Maypole will be raised at 1pm. Visit the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation website for more information, including full entertainment schedule.

Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps Concert (26-June-2011)

Oregon Crusaders 2011 DebutThe Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps 2011 debut performance takes place Sunday, June 26, at Director Park in downtown Portland.

The Oregon Crusaders are Oregon’s only drum and bugle corps. They’ve got a long, trophy strewn, history, and are starting up their 2011 season.

I had no idea “drum and bugle corps” was a thing, except Heather tells me she used to be play in one in her younger days, and last year (or maybe in 2009?) at the halftime of a Timbers game we saw the Oregon Crusaders perform. I tried to find a YouTube video that would do them justice, but there aren’t any that really convey how impressive, and loud, a live performance can be. So if you’re downtown on Sunday, check them out – the show is free, and starts at 5pm.

June 21, 1942: Japanese Submarine Fires at Fort Stevens

Front page of The Oregonian, June 23, 1942In the first attack on a primary military objective in the continental United States, a Japanese submarine fired shells at Fort Stevens, at the mouth of the Columbia river, on June 21, 1942. (The Oregonian, 23-June-1942).

The attack, which began at 11:30 P. M., stirred residents of Astoria hillside residential sections and scores of persons along the popular Clatsop vacation beaches from sleep. Dozens told of hearing the roar of the submarine’s gun and some said they saw the muzzle flash . . .

The shells came “too damn close,” said Colonel Carl S. Doney, commanding officer of the harbor defense of the Columbia, who permitted newsmen to visit and photograph the craters made by the exploding projectiles.

The attacking ship undoubtedly was a submarine and fired from a distance of several miles offshore, said Colonel Doney.

Seventeen shells were fired, but they caused little damage and no lives were lost.
