July 28, 1966: Final Run of the Astoria-Megler Ferry

July 28, 2011 by Dave 1 Comment

Front page of The Oregonian (29-July-1966)The M.R. Chessman made the final Astoria-Megler ferry run on July 28, 1966 (The Oregonian, 29-July-1966).

Hundreds of nostalgic ferry riders left the Astoria dock at 9 p.m. Thursday to crossover the 4 1/2 miles of river, returning from Megler at 10:30 p.m. Dozens of present and former crewmen who have worked in the ferry service here over the last five decades were aboard.

Though the Astoria-Megler Bridge would not officially open until August 27, the bridge opened to automobile traffic at 6am on July 29, relieving the ferry boats of their duty.

2016 Update: the Astoria ferry may be coming back!

July 27, 1940: Bugs Bunny Debuts, Voiced by Mel Blanc

July 27, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

Mel BlancMel Blanc, the man of a thousand voices, grew up in Portland, Oregon. The Lincoln High School grad began his showbiz career in 1927 on the KGW program The Hoot Owls.  He later worked for KEX producing and hosting Cobwebs And Nuts, before making his way to Hollywood in 1935 where his famous association with Warner Bros. began.

He began voicing Porky Pig and debuted Daffy Duck in the 1937 short Porky’s Duck Hunt. Other voices for which he earned fame include Foghorn Leghorn, Yosemite Sam, Tweety Bird, Pepe le Pew, and Sylvester the Cat. Blanc was also the original voice of Woody Woodpecker, though due to contractual issues he had to give up that gig.

Bugs Bunny, however, is the most famous Mel Blanc voiced character. Elements of Bugs were found in earlier Happy Rabbit cartoons, but A Wild Hare, largely considered the first official Bugs Bunny cartoon, was released on July 27, 1940.
