Portland’s Civic Stadium (now
Jeld-Wen Field Providence Park) played host to the NASL championship SoccerBowl on August 28, 1977 (The Oregonian, 29 August 1977)
Steve Hunt discovered Giorgio Chinaglia lurking unmarked in the Seattle goalmouth Sunday afternoon, and their collaboration, at 77:19, gave the Cosmos a 2-1 victory at Civic Stadium and the 1977 North American Soccer League championship.
Hunt’s cross, instantly conceived and exquisitely executed, sought out Chinaglia as if the ball had eyes. The big striker simply nodded it past scrambling Seattle goalkeeper Tony Shursky.
The match was Pelé‘s last professional league appearance.
