Match Day (20-August-2011): Portland Timbers vs. Vancouver Whitecaps

August 20, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Portland TimbersThe Portland Timbers (7-12-5) try to regain form this Saturday, August 20, 2011 when the MLS Vancouver Whitecaps (3-12-9) make their first visit to Jeld-Wen Field. Kickoff is at 7pm.

The match will be shown on FOX Soccer, and you can hear it on 750 AM The Game or La Pantera 940 AM.

Portland’s woes on the road continue, but at home the team has had their best performances. But the Timbers haven’t had as hard a time of it as the Whitecaps, who sit alone at the bottom of the standings with only 18 points out of 24 matches. Portland may be only two spots higher with 26 points, but is still gunning for a wildcard playoff spot.

An honor both teams are aiming for is the 2011 Cascadia Cup. Seattle leads in points (5) with 1 win and 2 draws, but Vancouver (1) and Portland (1) play twice still this season (including tonight’s match); a pair of wins for either may be enough to claim the cup.

If you still need more soccer this weekend, head to Jeld-Wen field again on Sunday at noon when the Timbers Reserves host the Whitecaps Reserves. 10,000 cheap (i.e. $10) tickets have already been sold!

August 19, 1818: Captain James Biddle Retakes Possession of Oregon Country for USA

August 19, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Captain James BiddleUnder orders to to proceed to the Columbia River, with a view to assert on the part of the United States the claim to the sovereignty, by some symbolical or appropriate mode adapted to the occasion, Captain James Biddle anchored at the mouth of the river on August 19, 1818 in the warship Ontario (An Event of One Hundred Years Ago, by T. C. Elliott in The Quarterly of the Oregon Historical Society Vol. 19, No. 3 – Sep., 1918).

Leaving his vessel at anchor outside the bar Captain Biddle “proceeded in with three boats well armed and manned with more than fifty officers and seamen.” The party landed inside Cape Disappointment on the quiet shore of Baker’s Bay near where the buildings of Fort Canby are now located, and there went through the ceremonies of waving and saluting the American flag (with three cheers), of turning up a sod of earth and nailing a leaden tablet to a tree. Meantime the guns of the sloop roared in salute, the few Chinook Indians who happened to be present looked on in wonder, and the fur traders at Fort George fifteen miles away were suddenly awakened from the monotony of their secluded life.

Under the terms of the Treaty of Ghent (1814) all conditions reverted to status ante bellum, which the Americans interpreted as meaning their claims to the Oregon Country were intact, despite Great Britain’s war-time takeover of Fort Astoria, which they had renamed Fort George. Captain Biddle’s mission was meant to underline the American point of view.

August 18, 1946: All-American Football Conference Debuts With Exhibition Game in Portland, Oregon

August 18, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Ad for tickets to Dodgers vs Rockets at Multnomah Civic Stadium (The Sunday Oregonian, 18 August 1946)The All-American Football Conference (AAFC), for a few brief years at the end of the 1940s, put up a respectable challenge to the National Football League’s dominance of professional American football. In 1946, its first year of competition, AAFC rosters included 40 College All-Stars, a pair of recent Heisman Trophy winners, and more than a hundred players with NFL experience.

At the beginning of that first year, the Brooklyn Dodgers began looking for a Northwest training site – ultimately Bend was chosen over Seaside, Astoria, Salem, Eugene, Longview, and Vancouver (The Sunday Oregonian, 23 August 1946).

After weeks of training in Bend, the Dodgers arranged to play the Chicago Rockets in Portland, in what would be the nascent league’s very first, pre-season, exhibition game. The game was played on Sunday, August 18, 1946 at Multnomah civic stadium (The Oregonian, 19 August 1946).

Gridiron warriors of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Chicago Rockets, playing for keeps and steady jobs this fall and winter, staged a spectacular 14-to-14 battle at Multnomah civic stadium Sunday night.

And when the bruising duel was over, the 18,000 shirtsleeved fans who viewed the thriller were firmly convinced the two teams will go a long way in the new All-American football conference.

The AAFC regular season began a few weeks later, on September 6, 1946, with the Cleveland Browns defeating the Miami Seahawks 44-0. The Browns would go on to win the championship that year, and each year of the league’s existence.

Ultimately though, competition with the NFL proved too difficult, and after the 1949 season the two leagues merged. Three AAFC teams joined the NFL (San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Colts) while the rest of the teams folded.
