Portland Nursery Apple Tasting Event 2011

Portland Nursery‘s 24th Annual Apple Tasting Event takes place over the next two weekends (Friday-Sunday, October 14-16, and 21-23) at the SE 50th and Stark location.

After the beer-focused festivals, this is my favorite fall event. Apple tasting, old fashioned cider pressing, apple desserts, cooking demonstrations, and live music – what’s not to like? Heather also freakin’ loves apples! [more]

Great American Distillers Festival

The 7th annual Great American Distillers Festival takes place Saturday and Sunday, October 23 and 24 2011 at the Left Bank Annex (101 N Weidler), 1pm until 7pm both days.

This festival is a gathering of small distillers from across the country who come to Oregon – the Mecca of craft distilling, to share their products, their passion and their expertise in handcrafting spirits.There will be tastings, seminars, a mixology contest for bartenders and more! [more]

City of Portland Free Financial Planning Day

The City of Portland and the Financial Planning Associations of Oregon and SW Washington bring you Portland Financial Planning Day this Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Portland Building (1120 SW 5th), second floor.

Dozens of Portland Area financial planners will offering free one-on-one counseling and seminars on budgeting, income taxes, investment strategies, mortgages and foreclosures, retirement planning and more. The advice will be offered on a “no strings attached” basis – planners will not be giving out business cards or selling financial products or services. [more]

North Portland Oktoberfest

Now that fall is definitely here, it’s time for the 2nd annual North Portland Oktoberfest, held this Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Historic Kenton Firehouse (8105 N. Brandon) from 3pm to 10pm.

The fest features a German bratwurst, kraut and pretzel dinner – with Widmer Brewing beer! Attendees receive a commemorative glass mug, a sponsor coupon book, and of course a fantastic experience. [more]

Brewpublic‘s third annual Killer Beer Week takes place from Sunday to Sunday, October 16 through 23, 2011. KillerBeerWeek aims to deliver some of the best and most interesting beers the region has to offer at some of the best pubs in the Portland area.

Moulin Rouge Spectacular Spectacle

The 4th annual Moulin Rouge Spectacular Spectacle, brought to you by Fleur de Lethal Cinematheque, takes place Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne Blvd).

For one night only the legendary Bagdad Theater transforms into a champagne and absinthe drenched Montmarte as Fleur de Lethal plays host to the 4th Annual “Sing Out” screening of Baz Lurhmann’s 2001 musical epic starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman. [more]

October 20, 2006: Portland Streetcar Begins Service to South Waterfront

The modern Portland Streetcar that debuted in 2001 connected the Good Samaritan Hospital in Northwest Portland to the Portland State University campus in Southwest.

In 2005, the line was extended to Riverplace, and on Friday, October 20, 2006 the line finally reached the South Waterfront district (The Oregonian, 21 October 2006).

The Portland Streetcar launched service Friday into the South Waterfront district, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and music to mark the line’s extension to Southwest Moody and Gibbs. Bela Balogh of the Meester and Meester Trio –part of the Portland group 3 Leg Torso –performs Friday with his partners during a charter ride of the extension, which stops adjacent to the Oregon Health & Science University’s Center for Health & Healing.

In 2007 an eight-block extension to Lowell Street was completed. Construction began on the Eastside Loop in 2010, with the first tracks being laid east of the Willamette on February 1st of that year.

Join Karissa, the Ringleader of Offbeat Belly Dance (pictured to the right), and the other fabulous dancers at the show Friday night.

Individually, the members of the Offbeat Belly Dance collective perform at shows throughout the Portland area, but on the 3rd Friday of the month they come together at the Blue Monk to perform in a rollicking belly dance revue. One of the things that makes it offbeat, is that the dancers choose whatever kind of music they like. Karissa tells me this has included traditional Middle Eastern music, zydeco, AC/DC, Strauss, The Pogues, hip hop, jazz, blues, Old Crow Medicine Show, the Spice Girls, and just about everything else.

The shows are free, and go from about 7pm until 9:30pm.

North Portland Oktoberfest (22-October-2011)

Now that fall is definitely here, it’s time for the 2nd annual North Portland Oktoberfest, held this Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Historic Kenton Firehouse (8105 N. Brandon) from 3pm to 10pm.

The fest features a German bratwurst, kraut and pretzel dinner – with Widmer Brewing beer! Attendees receive a commemorative glass mug, a sponsor coupon book, and of course a fantastic experience.

Ticket prices start at $15 for the outdoor beer tent, and go up from there depending upon which dinner hour you select. Purchase tickets in advance, or at the door. Proceeds from the fest benefit Ockley Green, the only public arts magnet school in North Portland. A majority of the students come from low-income households, and nearly 80 percent of students qualify for free or reduced price lunches. Thanks to a fiscal sponsorship provided by North Portland Community Works, a 501(c)(3), tickets and donations are tax deductible.

Portland Latin American Film Festival 2011

The 2011 Portland Latin American Film Festival (PDXLAFF) runs from October 20 through 26 at the Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy).

Serving the community as a non-profit cultural promoter under the guidance of Film Action Oregon, the 5th annual PDXLAFF is dedicated to showcasing perspectives of Latin American culture through an annual exploration of Latin film and is committed to increasing the visibility of Latin American cinema locally by showcasing new full-length feature films, documentaries and short films.

The films are presented in their original Spanish or Portuguese, with English subtitles – except for the opening night’s Chicogrande, about Pancho Villa, which is in both languages.
