Milk Carton Boat Race 2012 – Registration is Open!

2012 Milk Carton Boat RaceThe only Rose Festival affiliated event I care about returns in 2012: the Milk Carton Boat Race!

Race day is Sunday, June 10 (11am), at the Westmoreland Park casting pond.

After a seven year hiatus the race I obsessed about as a kid returned in 2009. Check out my 2009 and 2010 reviews. The basics for spectators: Bring a blanket (or lawn chairs) and a picnic lunch and enjoy the spectacle!

If you want to participate there are two categories of boat to choose from:

Racing class: designed for speed and consists of narrower and lighter frames

Showboat class: design is primary goal – does not race

There are four classes of racing boats: children, adults, family/multi-rider, and corporate. Read the Race Information and Rules (pdf) for all the details and visit the event website. Follow @MilkCartonBoat on Twitter for the latest news.

Friend of the blog Mike Vogel has raced the last two years.

To participate a store must be a retailer whose main primary business focuses on a physical store location, whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation.

Dozens of Oregon record stores are participating in the celebration, including Jackpot Records, Music Millennium, 2nd Avenue Records, Everyday Music, and more. Find participating venues at RecordStoreDay.com.

Save Our wild Salmon Coalition's 20th Anniversary CelebrationThe Save Our wild Salmon Coalition celebrates 20 years this Thursday, April 19, 2012 at the Keen Footwear Headquarters (926 NW 13th, #210) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The coalition of conservation organizations, fishing associations, river groups, and various other advocates, was founded in 1991 to work to restore to restore self-sustaining, abundant, and harvestable populations of wild salmon and steelhead to rivers, streams and oceans of the Pacific Salmon states.

Thursday’s celebration features food and beverages, music by DJ Jimbo, a raffle, and guest speakers including Oregon State Senator Jackie Dingfelder and State Representative Jules Bailey.

And everyone is invited, admission is free!

Visit WildSalmon.org for more information on the coalition, and the 20th anniversary celebration.

Portland’s Cheers to Belgian Beers (21-April-2012)

April 15, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Cheers to Belgian BeersPortland’s 6th annual Cheers to Belgian Beers takes place Saturday, April 21, 2012 at Metalcraft Fabrication (723 N Tillamook) from noon until 9pm. (So here’s the plan: arrive early, enjoy delicious beer, and then head to the Timbers match at 7:30pm!)

The yeast strain selected this year (by Hopworks Urban Brewery) is Wyeast 3864: PC Canadian/Belgian Ale Yeast. Each participating brewery, via dart toss, was assigned color and strength characteristics to aim for, so some of the brewers are out of their comfort zones.

For beer styles, this is my favorite local beer festival (i.e. beers aren’t all IPAs!). The beers are truly experimental, and no doubt there will be some fantastic discoveries (and also possibly a few stinkers).

Admission is “free,”, but to taste you’ll have to buy a tasting package. $15 gets you a stemmed tasting glass and five drink tickets, and additional tastes are $1. This fest is 21 and over only.

The Oregon Brewers Guild has the full list of beers and more details.
