April 8, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Filmed By BikeThe 10th annual Filmed by Bike film festival takes place Friday through Sunday, April 13-18, 2012 at the Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton).

Filmed by Bike is a film festival featuring bike-themed movies from all around the world and this year we’re celebrating our 10th Anniversary. We receive over 100 submissions and a jury selects the winning movies. We curate those selections into six different programs that run across 13 showtimes and five days. This year we are showing 75 movies!

The festival kicks off Friday night with a street party on Clinton Street in front of the theater from 5:30pm to 11:30pm. The street party includes a beer garden and entertainment – including break dancers!

The show program is available on the website. Buy tickets online or at the door. Consider a festival pass!

OMSI Science Pub: The Last Neandertals (9-April-2012)

Omsi Science PubThe Last Neandertals: The Evolution and Extinction of a Species is the topic of of the next Portland OMSI Science Pub on Monday, April 9, 2012 at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne):

Human evolution can be traced back 7,000,000 years. Modern humans evolved in Africa only 200,000 years ago and as recently as 26,000 years ago we shared parts of the world with at least one other species – the Neandertals (or Neanderthals). Since the discovery of the first Neandertal remains in 1856 in Germany, this species has generated controversy: questions concerning their genetic relationship to modern humans, their capacity for language and artistic expression, and the reasons for their extinction. This Science Pub will present the latest research transforming our understanding of these ancient people and will focus, in particular, on the last surviving populations of Neandertals in Gibraltar.

The presenter is April Nowell, PhD, an archaeologist and associate professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Victoria.

The science begins at 7pm but arrive early (5pm doors open) to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $5.00 suggested donation/cover charge. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.

Portland TimbersThe Portland Timbers (1-2-1) host MLS cellar dweller Chivas USA (1-3-0) at Jeld-Wen Field today at 7:30 p.m.

The match will be broadcast live on KPTV 12, 750 AM The Game, and La Pantera 940 AM.

The Timbers, struggling to play consistently on the road, are coming off their first home loss of the season last week, and second loss in a row. Chivas should not present quite the challenge that Real Salt Lake did, but that’s why you play the game. Chivas lost last week too, to Kansas City, but they secured their first win of the season the week before, defeating Real Salt Lake 1-0.
