Summer is here! But even if you’re not camping in the wilds of Oregon this weekend, you’ll find plenty to do in town – the Multnomah County Fair, for one thing. And don’t miss the Rose Festival fireworks show Friday night, and the Timbers face Cascadian Rival Vancouver on Saturday. And there’s lots more!
Ongoing
The 12th annual Village Building Convergence (VBC), a ten-day placemaking festival that combines crowdsourced activism, creative community development, hands-on education and celebration, takes place in Portland from May 25 through June 3, 2012.
“We will come together to create benches, community kiosks, gardens, street paintings, tile mosaics, and more!” [more]
Rose Festival CityFair, part of Portland’s Official Festival, is open for three full weekends starting on Memorial Day weekend. This amazing metropolitan fair features local beer, live exotic animals, a wide variety of shopping in the CityFair Shopping Center, a brand new ride, special attractions and a customized fireworks show choreographed to your favorite classic rock hits on opening night! [more]
Friday
Admission to the Portland Art Museum (1219 SW Park) is free on Friday, May 25, 2012 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
The museum offers free admission ever fourth Friday (5 p.m.- 8 p.m.) of the month, so if you can’t make it this week, mark June 22, 2012 on your calendar! [more]
Rose Festival Fireworks Spectacular
The 2012 Rose Lighting Ceremony & Fireworks spectacular (which this year they’re calling the RoZone Fireworks Experience presented by Pacific Power) takes place Friday, May 25.
“Portland’s downtown waterfront illuminates during the Fireworks Spectacular, the Portland Rose Festival’s kick-off event.” [more]
Saturday-Monday
The 2012 Multnomah County Fair takes place on Memorial Day Weekend at Portland’s historic Oaks Park. The fair celebrates 106 years this year.
Seriously, don’t miss this! Heather and I had a blast at the 2010 fair – what’s not to like about red necks, funnel cakes, and award winning vegetables? And bunnies!? And this year you can have your photo taken, for free, with a 9 foot tall bigfoot! [more]
Saturday
Portland Timbers vs. Vancouver Whitecaps
Cascadian rivals Vancouver Whitecaps (5-3-3) and the Portland Timbers (3-5-3) meet for the first time this season at Jeld-Wen Field on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Hard to believe, but the Timbers are undefeated in May, with two 0-0 draws and last weekend’s 2-1 defeat of the Chicago Fire – they haven’t lost at home since the 2-1 defeat by Chivas on April 7. The Whitecaps lost to Toronto FC on Wednesday, and the Saturday before they drew 2-2 with the other Cascadian rivals at BMO Field in Vancouver. This should be an interesting match. [more]
