Epigenetics: The Merger of Nature and Nurture – OMSI Science Pub (7-May-2012)

May 6, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Omsi Science PubEpigenetics: The Merger of Nature and Nurture is the topic of the OMSI Science Pub on Monday, May 7, 2012 at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne):

Can genes learn by experience?

Every cell in your body has the same set of genes, but they don’t work in every cell in the same way. For example, your tongue cells don’t grow hair and the cells in your eye don’t digest food. Your cells are programmed to modify genes based on their function in the body, and some of those modifications occur in response to the environment: genes that cause the production of pigment in your skin are activated when your skin is exposed to sunlight, and genes that caused your fingers and toes to develop before you were born are inactivated for the rest of your life.

It has been thought that only mutations in the DNA could be passed on to the next generation and that traits acquired during a parent’s life are not passed to their offspring (e.g., weight lifters don’t produce babies with big muscles). However, recent research suggests that some genetic changes that happen over a lifetime are heritable. That is, while it may be true that “you are what you eat,” it may also be true that “you are what your mother ate.”

Epigenetics is the study of genetic changes that are based on mechanisms other than changes in the underlying DNA and it is changing the way scientists look at disease risk and treatment. At this Science Pub, come find out about new discoveries in genetics and how they might affect you or your kids.

Lisa Sardinia, PhD, JD, associate professor of biology at Pacific University and associate director of the Pacific Institute for Ethics and Social Policy, presents.

The science begins at 7pm but arrive early (5pm doors open) to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $5.00 suggested donation/cover charge. Minors with adults are welcome, otherwise this event is 21 and over.

If this Science Pub sounds familiar to you, then you may have attended the Science Pub in August, 2011 that covered the same topic.

Match Day: Portland Timbers vs. Columbus Crew (5-May-2012)

May 5, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Portland TimbersThe still flailing Portland Timbers (2-5-1) host the almost equally inept Columbus Crew (2-4-1) at Jeld-Wen Field this Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.

The match will be broadcast live on KPTV 12, Freedom 970, and La Pantera 940 AM.

The big question is which Timbers team will show up – the giant killers who defeated top of the table Kansas City two weeks ago, or the pathetic and uninspired Timbers who fell apart at Montreal last weekend.

Kick Ass Oregon History Vol 4 #6: Park Blocks Riot

May 4, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Kick Ass Oregon History Volume 4 episode 6: Park Blocks RiotKick Ass Oregon History is the latest series of podcasts from the enthusiastic historians behind ORHistory.com.

And volume 4 #6 just dropped: Park Blocks Riot.

In which we learn that to “occupy” is not a new verb.

The brains behind this Kick Ass project are the crack hustlers of Oregon History Doug Kenck-Crispin and Andy Lindberg. Doug is a graduate student studying Public History and Pacific Northwest History at PSU, and Andy, though a Portland native, is currently working as an actor in New York City. Doug does most of the research and writing for the podcasts with input from Andy, who voices the broadcasts with a thespian’s flair.

With the Kick Ass Oregon History podcast they plan to cover just the good stuff: Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll and Earth Shattering, Devastating Destruction.

Ultimately, our goal is to take Oregon History out of the hallowed halls of the academy, get folks excited and enthused about this shared history, and get them out into the state, digging it and experiencing it. Get them to embrace it, and get their boots muddy in the process. It’s all OUR History; nobody owns it.

Visit ORHistory.com and stay tuned to @Oregon_History on Twitter for further details on specific episodes and the series. Catch up on missed episodes at the Kick Ass Oregon History archives.
