H. P. Lovecraft Film Festival and Cthulhu Con 2012
The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival and Cthulhu Con returns to Northeast Portland’s Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy) from Friday, May 11 through Sunday, May 13, 2012.
The H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival promotes the works of H.P. Lovecraft, literary horror, and weird tales through the cinematic adaptations by professional and amateur filmmakers. The festival was founded in 1995 by Andrew Migliore in the hope that H.P. Lovecraft would be rightly recognized as a master of gothic horror and his work more faithfully adapted to film and television.
This festival of cosmic horror and unnameable fear features author readings, filmmaker discussions, a raffle, and of course shunned shorts and feature films – the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival is the only festival that understands. And don’t miss the Arkham Bazaar for Lovecraftian Novelties to Other Weird Oddities.
Several ticket options are available. Visit the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival website and the Facebook page for more information.
St Johns Bizarre 2012
The 6th annual St Johns Bizarre kicks off Portland’s summer street fair season this Saturday, May 12, 2012.
From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. downtown St. Johns is transformed into a bizarre bazaar. The St Johns Parade, in its 50th year, begins at noon. Following the parade the six block St Johns business district (Lombard between N. Leavitt and N. Baltimore) is closed to traffic and occupied by over 75 juried craft vendors, several stages, and lots of great food and activities. (Philadelphia and Leavitt will be closed from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
The music lineup this year includes The Corin Tucker Band, AU, Old Light, Grandparents, the Dusu Mali Band, and more (the full music schedule is on the blog).
And of course there is beer! Occidental Brewing is sponsoring this year’s “Ye Olde Der Bier Garten”, which will feature not only their own beers, but also brews from Ninkasi, Lompoc, and Laurelwood breweries.
The Bizarre is free and fun for all ages. For additional event details visit www.stjohnsbizarre.com, the Facebook page, and follow @StJohnsBizarre on Twitter.

Kick Ass Oregon History Presents: The Seventh Day (11-May-2012)
Kick Ass Oregon History presents the film The Seventh Day at 5th Avenue Cinema (510 SW Hall) on Friday, May 11, 2012.
Labeled by some in our current era as “The FIRST Occupy Portland,” The Seventh Day was made by Portland State University students, with the help and guidance of the university’s Center for the Moving Image, during the student strikes that erupted on college campuses across the nation in May of 1970. PSU’s campus became the site of a violent confrontation between the Portland police and protesters that sent over 30 to area hospitals. The events leading up to, and the melee itself are all chronicled in this important film. The Oregonian film review of June 5th, 1970 called The Seventh Day “an excellent film about a truly historic event in the history of our community.” My guess is 42 years later, this statement is even more true.
A virgin 16mm copy of the film from the Tom Taylor Collection, Gift of the Taylor Family, Special Collections, Portland State University Library, will be shown. The film’s context will be laid out by orhistory.com’s enthusiastic Resident Historian, Doug Kenck-Crispin. Witness to the 1970 riot, PSU history professor David Horowitz, will speak, and Josh Feinberg will provide live sitar music – no joke!
Admission is a mere $5, and beer and wine will be available. The show begins at 7 p.m.
Prepare yourself for the evening by listening to Park Blocks Riot, Kick Ass Oregon History podcast, Vol 4 #6!
