October 15, 2015 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Apple season is still upon us – you have a second weekend to catch the Apple Tasting at Portland Nursery. Home movies, “killer” pumpkin beers, “Walktoberfest,” and vintage video games round out a rainy fall weekend!

All Weekend

Portland Nursery Apple Tasting Event 2015

Apple Tasting Event at Portland NurseryThe 28th Annual Apple Tasting Event at Portland Nursery (SE 50th and Stark) takes place over the next two weekends (Friday-Sunday, October 9-11, and 16-18-21, 10 AM to 5 OM each day).

After the Polish Festival and sundry Oktoberfests, this is my favorite fall event. What’s not to like? There’s Apple tasting, old fashioned cider pressing, apple desserts, cooking demonstrations, and live music.

Saturday – Sunday

Portland Retro Gaming Expo

Portland Retro Gaming ExpoThe 2015 Portland Retro Gaming Expo takes place October 17-18 at the Oregon Convention Center (777 NE MLK Jr.).

Saturday

Killer Pumpkin Festival 2015

Killer Pumpkin FestWhat can we say? If you like pumpkin craft beer, you’re going to once again LOVE this event hosted by the Green Dragon pub. All things pumpkin, including pumpkin foodie treats, the beloved pumpkin smashing festivities, and more pumpkin beers than you can shake a stick at (well over 40 locked in so far!).

The Dragon has a permit to close SE 9th Ave down to traffic in order to make room for surplus family pumpkin fun. This will again be Portland’s biggest pumpkin party. And make sure to be there when Elysian Brewing brings its Pumpkin Roadshow and its enormous pumpkin to be tapped that is full of one of nine Elysian’s pumpkin beers. Don’t miss it!

Home Movie Day at the Hollywood Theatre

Home Movie DayHome Movie Day is a FREE community event that takes place each October in theaters, museums, libraries, and basements around the world. Bring in your 16mm, 8mm, and Super8 (please no video) for inspection and projection on the big screen. Trained film archivists will be on hand to answer your questions and prep your films for viewing.

Stumptown Stories: Portland’s Demented! (13 October 2015)

Portland’s Demented! – the latest installment of the Stumptown Stories series, begins at 7 PM on Tuesday, October 13 at Jack London bar (basement of the Rialto, SW 4th and Alder).

Nearly a century ago, Portland found itself in the throes of Ouija madness, and the only way out of the occult world was a one-way ticket to the insane asylum! Join host Heather Arndt Anderson for a special Halloween edition of Stumptown Stories, including a surprise film that critics say “might make you insane!”

Host Heather Arndt Anderson will be joined by JB Fisher, co-author of Portland on the Take. Kick Ass Oregon History’s Resident Historian Doug Kenck-Crispin will MC.

Stumptown Stories, batshit crazy stories from the murkiest, weirdest, and nuttiest corners of Portland history, takes place the second Tuesday of every month at the Jack London.

Admission is free. Doors open at 7 PM, 21 and over only.

Now in its 3rd year, there will be over 25 peach beers and ciders in a variety of styles, as well as a peach-infused food and dessert menu and peach cocktails.

appleline2008After the Polish Festival and sundry Oktoberfests, this is my favorite fall event. What’s not to like? There’s Apple tasting, old fashioned cider pressing, apple desserts, cooking demonstrations, and live music. Also my wife Heather freakin’ loves apples!

In 2010 Heather and actually tried all of the 65+ varieties of apples and pears (this year’s fest features over 50 varieties) – in previous years the line was too daunting. The key, we learned, is to arrive early before the tasting line gets too long. The same varieties of apples and pears in the tasting are available to take home by the pound.

Visit the website for more details, including music schedule and special event days.
