Crafty Wonderland Super Colossal Holiday Sale (December 10-11, 2011)

December 6, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

THE CRAFTY WONDERLAND SUPER COLOSSAL HOLIDAY SALE!!!The 2011 Crafty Wonderland Super Colossal Holiday Sale takes place at the Convention Center (777 NE MLK Jr – exhibit hall C) on Saturday and Sunday, December 10 and 11, from 11am until 6pm.

With a rotating line up of talented vendors, Crafty Wonderland is the place to go to find the best handmade goods in the NW, as well as affordable work from talented visual artists. It’s an event meant to bring together crafty people with those who appreciate cool handmade items, to support artists, and to spread the joy of craft throughout our community. The show even offers a kids’ area where budding young artists can set up and sell their work! Each Crafty Wonderland features a free DIY area where local artists share their talent and teach visitors how to make a craft of their own to take home. Past DIY table projects have included snow globes, 1” buttons, shadow puppets, seed art portraits and cupcake decorating, to name a few.

Over 250 vendors will be on hand offering reversible hats, quirky t-shirts, hand made jewelry, stationery, tons of art, and lots more.

Admission is free, and early shoppers each day receive a Goodie Bag. Visit the Crafty Wonderland website and Facebook event page for more details.

Heather and I have attended in years past, and can attest that for the craft fanciers, this is a can’t miss event. We can also attest that if you plan to arrive early in anticipation of the goodie bag, be prepared to stand in a long snaking line (fortunately indoors thanks to the Convention Center’s cavernous foyer/hallway). Later in the day there was no line to enter. Personally I can’t remember a single thing in the goodie bag, so maybe it’s not worth the standing in line – your call!

Portland Pirate Festival (September 3-4, 2011)

August 29, 2011 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Portland Pirate FestivalThe sixth annual Portland Pirate Festival invades Historic St. Helens, Oregon this Saturday and Sunday, September 3 and 4, 2011.

I have never made it to this event (for one thing I have no swashbuckling outfit), so all I can vouch for is what they say on the website – looks like fun! The fest features pirate-themed and non-pirate-themed music, dance and performance, historical reenactments (with cannons!), stuff for kids, and of course there grub and grog!

The aaarrrs and blimeys begin at 10am both Saturday and Sunday, and continue until midnight pm Saturday and 10pm Sunday. Chervona (one of my favorite Portland bands) finishes off the festival with exuberance on Sunday night!

Tickets can be acquired at the gate, via Brown Paper Tickets, or at select local retailers.
