Portland Weekend Amusements (22-24 April 2016)

April 22, 2016 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

If you like German-style beer, cider, and Polish culture – well then you’re in luck this weekend! And it’s all going down on Saturday.

Saturday

Crown the Eagle Festival: A Polish Heritage Party

Crown the Eagle Festival To celebrate its rich and historically significant past, the White Eagle hosts a full-day of Polish and Polish-inspired fare, featuring members of Portland’s Polish community, a lively history presentation, live music, sing-alongs and traditional food and drink specials. Join us to enjoy: Polish games & crafts, facepainting, a beer special and a Passport Discovery Hunt.

Third Annual Hopped Cider Fest

Hopped Cider FestThe third annual Hopped Cider Fest, featuring the finest hopped ciders from across the country for the greatest showcase of hoppiness ever assembled in the known universe, takes place Saturday, 23 April 2016 at Reverand Nat’s Hard Cider public taproom (1813 NE 2nd Ave).

Most of the ciders (visit the event page for the full list) are made especially for the festival, and in addition to ciders from Nat’s other cideries participating include Cider Riot, Schilling & Company, Wildcraft, Finnriver Farm & Cidery, Wandering Aengus, and more.

The $20 admission included a commemorative tasting glass and 7 tokens, each good for a 4 ounce taster. Additional tokens are $2 each.

Reinheitsge-Not Beer Fest

Reinheitsge-Not BeerFestCelebrate the world’s oldest beer rules by drinking beers that break them! The German Beer Purity Law of 1516 turns exactly 500 years old on April 23rd, 2016. Also called the Reinheitsgebot, this law states that beer can ONLY be made from Water, Barley, Hops and Yeast. But that’s just boring! So we pulled together some our favorite breweries in the Northwest to brew some beers that break these silly beer rules.

GermanFest 2016

GermanFest at Bailey's TaproomThe 6th annual GermanFest takes place Saturday, 23 April 2016, at Bailey’s Taproom (213 SW Broadway).

From noon until midnight enjoy German-style beers brewed by Oregon breweries, German sausages from Altengartz German Brand Bratwurst (parked out front), and – after 4pm upstairs – School of Krautrock, a German Electronic Music Chronology.

Visit the event page for more details – including the full brewery and beer list.

Record Store Day (16 April 2016)

Record Store Day

The 2016 Record Store Day falls on Saturday, 16 April: support your local record store!

This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers, and the artists—to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, DJs spinning records, and on and on. In 2008 a small list of titles was released on Record Store Day and that list has grown to include artists and labels both large and small, in every genre and price point. In 2015, 60% of the Record Store Day Official Release List came from independent labels and distributors. The list continues to include a wide range of artists, covering the diverse taste of record stores and their customers.

Dozens of Oregon record stores are participating in the celebration, including Jackpot Records, Music Millennium, 2nd Avenue Records, Everyday Music, and more. Find participating venues at RecordStoreDay.com.

CSA Share Fair

CSA Share FairMeet and talk directly to local farmers who grow our food! More than 40 local farmers, ranchers, and fishers will showcase CSA options, including vegetables, fruits, pastured meats, wild fish, eggs, flowers, honey, and more. . .

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a growing movement that connects eaters and farmers. This is a win-win: You get healthy, fresh, farm-direct food every week, and your farmer gets freedom and security. Other benefits of CSA shares include getting to know your farmer, eating more vegetables, supporting a local business, connecting with your food, and investing in low impact farming practices that protect our drinking water, soils, and wildlife habitat.

Portland Timbers vs. Real Salt Lake

Real Salt Lake [goddamn that’s a stupid name] visit Providence Park on Saturday, 19 March 2016 to face the Portland Timbers in their second home match of the regular season.

The Timbers look to bounce back from a loss last weekend against an undefeated RSL team coming off a 2-1 victory over Seattle.

Some matchup factoids for you:

The match on Saturday will be the 19th competitive game (regular season, postseason and U.S. Open Cup) between the two teams. This marks the first time that Portland has faced an MLS opponent 19 times since the Timbers first joined the league in 2011.

In 2015, the Timbers led all of MLS with the most shots in both the regular season and the postseason. To start this season, Portland is again getting shots off at an impressive clip with 36, good for second-most in the league. [More]
