December 4-6: Culture, Repeal Day, and Artisan Beer, Food, Wine, and Spirits

December 3, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

The approaching weekend took me by surprise. There are as many worthwhile events as on some of the busiest summer weekends.

Holiday Ale FestivalHoliday Ale Festival

The fest continues its run, all through the weekend, at Pioneer Courthouse Square. The central downtown location means your steps away from transit when the night comes to an end. Though cold and often wet outside, inside the dry tent the beers are big and warming. The Organic Brewers Festival in May is my favorite, but I understand why this festival is tops for many.

Nightmare_100The Cort and Fatboy Midnight Movie

The movie this Friday, December 4th is the Tim Burton classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Feel free to sing along.

The solid mediocrity takes place at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne). Admission is $3 (21 and over only), and arrive early if you want a seat!

ScanFair 2009

scanfair2009Come for the Scandinavian food, crafts, and the 54th crowning of Oregon’s Lucia Queen of Light. Stay for the Pickled Herring Eating Contest at noon Saturday. The Scandinavian Heritage Foundation’s 25th Annual ScanFair takes place this weekend at PSU’s Smith Center.

Visit the website for more details, including the entertainment schedule for both Saturday and Sunday.

Season’s Eatings

A benefit for the Oregon Food Bank, Season’s Eatings is a local artisans food, wine and spirits market that takes place Saturday, December 5th from noon to 5pm at the New Deal Distillery and Tasting Room (1311 SE 9th).

Some of the region’s best chocolates, cheeses, wines, spirits, charcuterie, baked goods, and pasta will be available to sample and to purchase.

Repeal Day
endofpro100Celebrate the anniversary of the end of Prohibition, all day Saturday December 5th . . . anywhere you’d like!

Join me in a toast to our brewers, vintners, distillers, distributors, publicans, bartenders, waitrons, and friends!

The fair is on the 3rd floor of the Smith Memorial Center (1825 SW Broadway). Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, and children under 12 get in free.

The event raises funds for PSU Nordic language classes and the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation, the mission of which is to preserve, communicate and celebrate Scandinavian heritage and culture.

Though primarily a holiday bazaar, we had a great time at last year’s ScanFair.

The highlight was the annual pickled herring eating contest. The winner, Nick Capri, took home as a prize a bottle of Krogstad Aquavit, made by Portland’s House Spirits.

And yes, we have footage:

October 3: The Wedge and the 2009 Portland Baconfest

September 30, 2009 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

The WedgeThe Wedge: Portland Celebrates Cheese Festival brings over 30 cheesemakers to SE Portland to share (and sell) their artisan and farmstead cheeses.

Hosted by The Green Dragon Pub (928 SE 9th), the farmers market style event takes place on SE 9th between Belmont and Yamhill from 10am to 4pm. Activities include seminars on pairing cheese with distilled spirits, demonstrations on how to make cheese at home, and contests and prizes for the kids. Visit the website for more details.

bfest09-150As the cheese fest winds down, head over to the EastBurn (1800 E Burnside) to celebrate another fantastically arteriosclerotic food: bacon. The 2009 Portland Baconfest, a Bacon Extravagana for the Masses runs from 3 to 10pm.

Yes, there will be bacon eating contests! Other bacony activities include a bacon dance off, a bacon confessional, and count the bacon.

This event is sponsored by PDX.fm and The Meat Show, and is a benefit for the Oregon Food Bank and Outside In. 21 and over only, $5.00 + 2 cans of food gets you in.

September 25-27: Oktoberfest at Oaks Park

2012 Oaks Park Oktoberfest info here!

Oktoberfest!Three words: Wiener dog races. That’s really all you need to know, but in addition you will also enjoy imported German beer, sausages, all the oompah music you can stomach, and chicken dancing until the wee hours! Yup, the Zenner’s Oktoberfest at Oaks Park takes place this weekend, from Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27th.

A variety of Paulaner beers will be on tap to accompany the schnitzel and locally produced Zenner’s sausages. Check out the Oaks Park site for the schedule of activities, including pretzel tosses, condiment art contests, and sausage eating contests, each day. And the Polkatones are back! (Download the live music and stage schedule here – pdf.).

This Oktoberfest is one of my favorite fall festivals. The setting at the river front Oaks Park is fantastic – while you’re at the festival you can go on the rides, enjoy the midway, or go roller skating. With two giant festhallen, you can stay dry if it’s raining, shaded if it’s sunny. And of course nothing beats wiener dog races for sheer squeaky toy excitement!

Admission is only $5 ($3 for seniors, $2 for kids under 15), and the beers and food are reasonably priced.
