Mardi Gras on Mississippi AveWhy wait until Tuesday? Celebrate Mardi Gras on Historic Mississippi Avenue, Saturday, February 13.

Join us Saturday February 13 for a day filled with family fun and celebrating Mardi Gras! There will be mask making, and bike decorating at the Q Center with face painting and balloon artists. Then you and the kids can join in on our Moving Street Parade at 3:00pm which starts at Skidmore and ends at Fremont. Follow that up with photos and puppet show from Mudeye Puppet Company at the Mississippi Pizza Pub.

So yeah, Saturday’s Mardi Gras celebration on Saturday, is decidedly “family-friendly”.

But return, sans children, to the Boise neighborhood on the real Fat Tuesday, February 16th for more fun, including:

Mississippi Pizza and Pub‘s (3552 N Mississippi) first ever pizza eating contest!

Miss Delta (3950 N Mississippi), from 5pm until 10pm, will be offering live music, cool drinks, dancing girls and soul food.

Gumbo Gallery (3636 N Mississippi, Suite B) will be hosting a “Happy Hour Sale” from 5-7pm: Reduced prices on Mardi Gras party hats and beads, novelty eye-glasses, eye masks, feather boas and umbrellas.

And ¿Por qué No? (3524 N Mississippi) will be offering special Mardi Gras inspired martinis.

Lovely Hula Hands closing on New Years Eve

December 5, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Lovely Hula HandsSadly, Lovely Hula Hands, one of my favorite Portland restaurants, will operate for the last time on New Years Eve, 2009.

In a mailing list email sent out this morning, Lovely Hula Hands owners Sarah and Jane Minnick write:

Also, at the end of this month, Lovely Hula Hands will be closing. The reasons for this are many, but in the end it comes down to one thing above all. When we first opened the restaurant six years ago, a family member was our chef. As time went on and this changed, we found ourselves in the position of running a restaurant from the front of the house. That is, we relied on someone from outside the family to direct the kitchen. As you know from the loyalty of our customers and the critical reception that Lovely Hula Hands has received, we have always been lucky with the talented people we’ve chosen. But now it just makes sense for us to focus on our new venture 100 % and have more of a hand in the production of the things we serve.

We plan to have a great final month at Lovely Hula Hands and finish strong with the same seasonal menu, cocktails, etc. New Years Eve will be our last night open.

On the bright side, they are opening a new restaurant next door, Lovely Fifty Fifty, sometime in January!

It will have a lot of things in common with LHH- a seasonal menu, buying exclusively from local farmers and ranchers, a hefty list of salads and starters, and even one or two wood fired entrees along with the pizza offerings. We will also have six flavors of seasonal homemade ice cream in a big case up front and people can get a scoop or a pint to go. Our current staff will stay with us and work next door, so no one is being put out of work in this economy.

October 17: Mississippi Marketplace grand opening with special guest Bill Walton

October 16, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

billwaltonblazers200Several of the food carts have been open a few weeks already, but the official Grand Opening of the Mississippi Marketplace (4233 N Mississippi, at Skidmore) takes place this Saturday from 1 until 6pm.

Roger Goldingay, the former NASL Timbers player and developer of the marketplace, has revealed also that there will be a special guest at the gala: his old friend and Trailblazers legend Bill Walton will be making an appearance.

The current food cart tenants of the marketplace are Nuevo Mexico, The Big Egg, Native Bowl, Magic Bean, SW Pizza, Ruby Dragon, Dogfeathers, Sushi Tree, Patty’s Wagon, and Sugar Cube is opening soon. Additional offerings Saturday include Mt. Angel farm’s fresh produce, LadlesPDX’s take-away soup, the scented bath and body products of Ocean Child, and Jim Jennings of Perceptive Touch Massage will be offering low cost chair massages from 4 to 8pm.

Mississippi Marketplace, the NASL Timbers, and Bill Walton

Speaking as a former, and future (come winter), resident of the neighborhood, the new food cart pod opening soon on Mississippi at Skidmore will likely be a great addition to the neighborhood – certainly better than a weed-filled vacant lot. Christened Mississippi Marketplace, the stated goal of the endeavor is to create a vibrant, affordable & high quality place for local food vendors helping to sustain the local food market.

In Saturday’s Oregonian article, Karen Brooks describes the developer and owner of the property, Roger Goldingay, as a former professional soccer player [who] has lived in the neighborhood for eight years and, until recently, owned the John Palmer House across the street.

Goldengay_RogerThis description piqued the interest of some Portland soccer fans. Via LendogPDX on Twitter I learned that Roger Goldingay is not merely a former professional soccer player, but a former NASL Portland Timber – he played forward for the 1975 and 1976 NASL Portland Timbers.

Roger did not, apparently, score any goals, or even tally one assist in his time here, and he even missed the team photo session in 1976, though he does appear in 1975’s. According to Bill Walton, yes, that Bill Walton, Roger Goldingay’s career was derailed by his own teammate who was worried that Roger was going to outplay him and ultimately take his job. I’d like to learn the rest of the story, but Bill Walton does not share it with us.

neverlookbackRoger Goldingay is also an Evergreen alumnus, and somewhat of a renaissance man; he authored the book Never Look Back. Amazon provides a couple awesome excerpts:

We sat in awed silence, metamorphosing from points of light to prehistoric man fascinated with flame. For eternal nanoseconds we flitted back and forth. One moment we were the fire, no more than ethereal flame. Nothing but a flicker of light and everlasting energy. The next moment we sat outside it and saw the flame as God, our beneficiary, our protector from woolly behemoths. In pagan disorder we danced around the fire all night, our hearts racing with discovery

She reached for me and her lips replaced Karla’s. It was the first time I kissed her. It was a deep passionate kiss, the juice of her mouth hot, her tongue exploring. A moment later, I felt Karla kissing my neck, her busy fingers unbuttoning my shirt and rubbing my chest. I reached for her breasts and found them free and loose under her T-shirt. Diane straddled my thigh and rubbed her vee on my leg through our blue jeans.

I’m going to hunt down a copy.
