Even more fries, cheese, and gravy goodness at Portland Poutine

Gumbo Cheese Fries at the Red FoxWe have posted the second poutine review over at Portland Poutine, the first in what I like to call the poutinesque category. Poutinesque meaning it lacks or exchanges one of the three key ingredients for something else. How does gumbo in lieu of gravy sound to you?

After an early afternoon last Sunday sampling the wares at the Great American Distillers Festival, we needed something substantial in our stomachs. And I don’t know about you, but Gumbo Cheese Fries sound awfully substantial.

HomemadeThen, over this past weekend, we made a trip to Trader Joe’s and, lo and behold, cheese curds!

Look at that orange cheese! We had never seen cheese curds at Trader Joe’s before. And when I tossed them into the shopping cart, it made a certain Portland Boy very happy. We already had a seemingly bottomless supply of poutine gravy packets at home.

I think you can probably Guess What We Made for Dinner.

The Original's poutine (with scotch egg)

I am proud to announce that Portland Poutine has published it’s first poutine review (by yours truly!). Heather and I made a special trip to The Original: A Dinerant two weekends ago to try the poutine, and we were not disappointed. Here’s an excerpt from the review:

We arrived on a lazy Sunday afternoon to take advantage of the Original’s every day happy hour (3pm-6pm, until 8pm at the bar). Four bucks for a platter of poutine is a great deal! It was such a great deal we also ordered the scotch egg with mustard, and the pigs in a blanket made with a kobe beef frank and served with cheddar fondue(!).

And below, enjoy a bonus photo of that kobe beef pig in a blanket with cheddar fondue mentioned above.

A different take on Portland’s Platting

In the 4000-year history of the grid, American incarnations are relatively new, appearing first about 300 years ago, frequently as a simple, orthogonal and often square (such as Portland’s) ‘Hippodamian’ grid, named after the planner of Miletus around 473 BC (Fig 1).

A session in the recent 2009 New Partners for Smart Growth conference focused on ‘The Beautiful American Grid — the Embodiment of Smart Growth,’ which lamented the fact that the grid ‘gets no respect’.

Presenting: Portland Poutine

PortlandPoutine.comFrench fries. Cheese Curds. Gravy. We have much to learn from Canada.

The perfect beer accompaniment and late night stomach filler’s popularity continues to grow in Portland. Just two years ago it was difficult (though not impossible) to find, now numerous restaurants in Portland serve poutine.

I’ve blogged about poutine quite a few times over the past couple years. I’ve come round to thinking poutine has staying power; there’s always room for more choices in the American junk food pantheon. As more and more restaurants in town start offering the dish, I figure the aficionados like myself need a Portland Hamburgers-esque place to share our thoughts, reviews, photos, and enjoyment of the French Canadian delicacy.

So, with the help of Heather of Mile73, I present to you: Portland Poutine.
