January 16, 2012 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Timbers ArmyCome out to the old stomping grounds this Saturday, January 21, 2012 when the Timbers Army Third Saturday returns to the Bitter End (1981 W Burnside).

Yes you get to try to ease off that sense of Timbers withdrawal by supporting one of our greatest game day drinking holes!!

Sip your pint whilst peering dreamingly at the beautiful Jeld-Wen field and fantasizing about what your going to do to once she lets you get in her.

Shake off those non-season blues by basking in the glow and familiarity of what many of you could call your Summer House.

“We’re all going to the Bitter End Pub,
the Bitter End Pub,
the Bitter End Pub!”

The gathering begins, of course, at 7:01pm. More details on the Facebook event page and at TimbersArmy.org.

December 14, 1915: Portland/Seattle Hockey Rivalry Begins

December 14, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Portland star Tommy Dunderdale in the Sunday Oregonian, 19 December 1915The first hockey game between a team from Portland and a team from Seattle took place on Tuesday, December 14, 1915, when the Portland Uncle Sams, also known as the Rosebuds, traveled North to face the Seattle Metropolitans (Morning Oregonian, 16 December 1915).

“It was a mighty hard game to lose, but we have the opportunity of evening up matters Friday night in the Portland Ice Hippodrome,” said Manager Savage, of the Portland hockey team, on his arrival in Portland early yesterday. His Uncle Sams received a 4 to 2 defeat at the hands of Pete Muldoon’s Seattle ice hockey team in Seattle Tuesday night.

“Up until the last 15 minutes of play we had outskated and outpointed them,” the local manager continued, “and just at a critical moment a penalty weakened our defense. Seattle scored a point and then added another within 15 seconds after the first. We tied it up and then with but four men on the ice wearing Portland uniforms we had two more points scored against us.”

Portland returned the favor, however, three nights later, defeating Seattle 5 to 2 at the Portland Ice Hippodrome (Sunday Oregonian, 19 December 1915).

1915 was the Seattle team’s inaugural year in the Pacific Coast Hockey Association. The Uncle Sams, also known as the Rosebuds, joined the league as the first American team in 1914.

Timbers Army 3rd Saturday (17-December-2011)

December 13, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Timbers ArmyThe final Timbers Army 3rd Saturday of 2011 goes down with a holiday theme on December 17. Seriously, pick a holiday: Festivus/Hanukkah/Xmas/Kwanza, and bring a gift for the White Elephant gift exchange:

1) Gifts should be wrapped and cost no more than $10.

2) Give a gift, take a gift during the draw. It’s that simple.

3) Humorous gifts are greatly appreciated but not necessary.

Burnside Brewing Co (701 E Burnside) plays host this month, be there at 7:01pm. Visit the Facebook event page for more details and to RSVP.

December 8, 1914: Portland Uncle Sams (aka Rosebuds) Play Inaugural Match

December 8, 2011 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Morning Oregonian headline, 9 December 1914The Portland Uncle Sams (also known as the Rosebuds) debuted on December 8, 1914 (Morning Oregonian, 9 December 1914).

Portland dedicated its new Ice Hippodrome last night to make a Vancouver holiday. The ice has been there for a month and thousands have exercised their squeaky joints, but yesterday was the official opening of the Pacific Coast Hockey League. Mayor Albee was there and faced the puck. About 2000 other society functionaries sat about and wondered what it was all about. In fact, it was a gala occasion in everything but one respect – and that was that Portland did not win.. . .

Perhaps 50 per cent of the crowd had never before witnessed a hockey game, and if there were any doubters they came away thrilled and electrified by the exhibition. Portland’s septet had been practicing only one week and occasionally play slackened, but in the main it was sensational quarrelmonging with the inoffensive bit of vulcanized rubber in the role of ye goat.

The final score was Vancouver 6, Portland 3. The Portland team would only two years later be the first American team to play for the Stanley Cup, which alas, they would also lose.

The Ice Hippodrome was located in Northwest Portland at Marshall, Northrup and Twentieth Streets (Morning Oregonian, 30 September 1913). It was home to the Portland Rosebuds, Portland Buckaroos, Portland Eagles & Portland Penguins until 1963, when it was unceremoniously razed.
