The first 2012 post-season Timbers Army First Thursday takes place Thursday, November 1, 2012 at the Bitter End Pub (1981 W Burnside).
And so begins the off-season. A time for reflection, a time for change, and a time for drinks with friends.

The Portland Timbers (8-16-9) host the league leading San Jose Earthquakes (19-6-8) this rainy afternoon at Jeld-Wen Field. Kick off is at 3:51 p.m.
The Timbers need a win in the last match of the season to avoid relegation . . . okay, not really, but they would certainly like a win tonight to ease the pain of a remarkably bad season, and to end it on a two game winning streak.
That’s crazy talk though, right? San Jose is top of the table and has the league’s leading scorer on the roster (who based on pre-match hype the league and NBC Sports would like to see tie or surpass the all-time league record of 27 goals this afternoon), Portland is near bottom of the table and the team is, frankly, just not very good. But San Jose has earned only one point against Portland this season. In July at home Portland beat San Jose 2-1, and last month the teams played to a 2-2 draw at Buck Shaw Stadium. Portland playing with pride against an opponent taking them too lightly can occasionally get a good result.
The match will be broadcast live on NBC Sports, 101.1 FM KXL, and La Pantera 940 AM.

Each year the Oregon Zoo acknowledges the reason for the season (i.e. pumpkins) right around Halloween.

Great Pumpkin Event at Portland Farmers Market
The Portland Farmers Market annual Great Pumpkin Event takes place on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the PSU market.
The pumpkin carving contest goes from 9 a.m. to noon (or while supplies last). Awards will be announced at 12:30 p.m. The winner in the kids competition receives a basket of market goodies. The adult contest winner gets $130 in Organic Valley coupons. [more]

Chapman Vaux’s Swift Watch 2012 – final weekend!
Every September thousands of Vaux’s Swifts come to Portland. After spending their day eating bugs, the Swifts coalesce in Northwest Portland, flying in a giant undulating swirl in the sky above the school. Around sunset the swirl gets more compact, like a ground pepper tornado, and begins disappearing, measure by measure, down the chimney. On the lawn below hundreds of Portlanders stare mesmerized at the sky, from the comfort of lawn chairs and blankets. Boos erupt when opportunistic Peregrine falcons get lucky. [more]

Portland’s form on the road is still awful, but at home this season they’ve mostly held their own. D.C. United are a likely playoff bound Eastern Conference team making the long trek across the country to possibly underestimate how tough Portland can occasionally play at home . . .

The Portland Juggling Festival is one of the largest regional juggling festivals in the United States, with jugglers from around the world and down the street joining together to share their knowledge and show their skills. We have performers, hobby jugglers, and beginners joining together for a two and a half days of throwing. Expect a big show Saturday evening, workshops for beginning, intermediate, and advanced jugglers, and vendors of every variety of juggling prop.
Attendees can choose from numerous workshops to attend, plus multiple vendors‘ wares to peruse. And take in a show: The Juggling and Vaudeville Extravaganza features a family-friendly assortment of local and national juggling and variety acts in one live performance, and highlights the festival on Saturday night.
