October 16, 1970: Portland Trail Blazers Play First Game

October 16, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

Front page of sports section (The Oregonian, 17 October 1970)The Portland Trail Blazers debuted at the Memorial Coliseum on Friday, October 16, 1970 (The Oregonian, 17 October 1970). The team treated the 4,273 fans (the Blazers’ 18 year string of consecutive sellouts was still years away) who came out to that first game to an exciting 4th quarter comeback to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers.

With the team trailing, 102-96, midway through the fourth quarter, [Blazer rookie Geoff] Petrie, who was held to four points in the first half, threw in six points in a remarkable 10-second flurry as the Blazers suddenly charged to within two points of the flustered Cavalier.

Cleveland countered the Petrie frenzy with a 10-foot jumper by center Walt Wesley, but Petrie negated the effort with another jumper to make it 106-104, Cleveland.

Then, from the blind side of Cleveland guard John Warrent, came Blazer guard Stan McKenzie with a steal and the tying basket with 4:07 left in the game.

And seconds later, it was Petrie again, following a brilliant defensive maneuver by LeRoy Ellis.

Ellis batted a McCoy McLemore shot high in the air to Petrie, who dribbled the length of the court to bang it home from 15 feet.

It was a play that brought the crowd up screaming, and it was the moment the Blazers performed their very first heart transplant, and won the soul of the first-nighters.

The final score was 115-112. The Blazers finished the season with 29 wins and 53 losses, a record they would not surpass until the 1974-75 season when rookie Bill Walton joined the team.

May 12, 1992: Clyde Drexler Named to the Dream Team

May 12, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

BlazersThe Portland Trail Blazers‘ Clyde “The Glide” Drexler was officially added to the 1992 United States men’s Olympic basketball team, aka the Dream Team, on May 12, 1992 (The Oregonian, 13-May-1992).

Drexler and Christian Laettner, who was also added to the team that day, were the final members of the team that many consider the best basketball team ever assembled.

Clyde actually got the word he would be added to the team the evening before, right before he played 51 minutes in a 153-151 double-overtime victory over the Phoenix Suns, netting 33 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and dishing out 11 assists.

The Dream Team made its debut in Portland, Oregon on June 28, 1992, when they defeated Cuba 136-57 in their first game in Tournament of the Americas. In the Barcelona Olympics the Dream Team won games by an average of 43.8 points, ultimately winning the gold medal without a single loss. The entire team was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010. As individuals every player on the roster except Laettner and every coach except Carlesimo has also been elected to the Hall of Fame.

April 8, 1977: Portland Trail Blazers Sellout String Begins

April 8, 2011 by Dave Leave a Comment

Blazers If one could pinpoint the onset of Blazermania, an argument could be made for the second to last regular season game of the 1976-1977 season.

On April 8, 1977, the Trail Blazers faced the Phoenix Suns at the Memorial Coliseum in front of a sell out crowd, defeating the Suns 122-111. That sellout, the 17th of the season, marked the beginning of an 18 year long string of sellouts, which didn’t end until November 20, 1995.

Of course 1977 was the year of a healthy Bill Walton and an amazing Portland Trail Blazers team that went on to win the franchise’s only NBA championship. Portland is a small market team that could.
