Portland Timbers added ten new players today in the Major League Soccer Expansion Draft. Analysis will follow, but here are the twenty players taken by Portland and Vancouver Whitecaps:

Three Draftees Leave Before Even Arriving in Portland by mao at the Portland Timbers Blog at The Offside

Gavin Wilkinson and John Spencer were busy all morning drafting players in the MLS Expansion Draft. They spent the afternoon moving players through trades, leaving just seven of the ten drafted players still under the Timbers’ name. The biggest news of the day was Portland’s trade of top pick Dax McCarty to DC United for young defender Rodney Wallace and a fourth round SuperDraft pick. Rumors are swirling that the Timbers have a major international central midfielder close to a deal, so moving McCarty, the most coveted player in the draft, clears room for that move. [more]

Timber Bits – Expansion Draft Edition Vol. 1 by paulsepp at Dropping Timber

Yesterday was a big day in Timbers history, and possibly the the wildest in terms of transfers, as the Timbers drafted two players who seem to have their bags packed, and drafted 3 others only to send them packing. The Timbers also selected five young and experienced players who will see playing time next year. The roster now stands at eleven and the hunt for talent continues. [more]

Timbers’ hope they’ll get Jonathan Bornstein by Scott French at ESPN Los Angeles

He’s signed, sealed and all but delivered to Mexico’s UANL Tigres, but that didn’t dissuade the Portland Timbers from taking a chance on Chivas USA captain Jonathan Bornstein.

The Timbers, one of two clubs joining Major League Soccer next season, selected Bornstein (Los Alamitos/Los Alamitos HS and UCLA) with the 15th selection in Wednesday’s 20-player expansion draft, no matter that the left back/midfielder is beginning a four-year contract in January with Monterrey-based Tigres. Nimo not Subject to Draft-Exclusion! at Prost Amerika Soccer

Real Salt Lake’s Alex Nimo was one of seven players waived by their clubs late on Wednesday night. Because he does not meet the age and service requirements to participate in the Re-Entry Draft, he is now available to sign a new contract with any MLS club on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Including Portland where he has played most of the last two years. [more]

MLS expansion draft recap – Timbers inaugural roster grows by Kip Kesgard at OregonLive.com

The MLS offseason began in earnest as the final whistle blew on the MLS Cup in Toronto on November 21, but the existing clubs knew the winter months were going to be anything but slow. With two new clubs joining the fold for 2011, the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps, MLS was hosting an expansion draft to help the new clubs populate their roster. [more]

The Portland Timbers’ dizzying day of draft and trades by Geoffrey C. Arnold at The Oregonian

The Portland Timbers did the expected and the unexpected during a flurry of trades and deals surrounding the 2010 Major League Soccer expansion draft Wednesday.

Not surprisingly, the Timbers used the first overall pick to select midfielder Dax McCarty from FC Dallas. But two hours later, the Timbers then turned around and traded McCarty to D.C. United in exchange for midfielder Rodney Wallace and a fourth-round draft choice in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft January 12. [more]

TimbersThe Portland Timbers (3-1-2) have not had a good home stand. And the opponent in the last of three matches at home in a week a much better team than Crystal Palace Baltimore or AC St. Louis. The Montreal Impact (2-1-2) visit PGE Park tonight. Kick off is at 7pm.

London reacts to snow much like Portland

February 2, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Portland’s not alone in being unprepared for unusually heavy snowfall.

LONDON — Cars skidded, people slipped, trains stopped and hospitals turned back non-emergency patients as heavy snows sweeping in from the east blanketed much of Britain on Monday, taking the nation by surprise with its severity despite alarm-laden weather forecasts.

Cold organic beer for this hot weekend

June 26, 2008 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

North American Organic Beer FestivalAs soon as I can sneak out of the office early Friday I’m jumping on the Yellow Line; The North American Organic Brewers Festival (NAOBF) returns to Overlook Park this weekend.

It’s my favorite summer beer festival in town; it’s not (yet . . .) nearly as crowded as the Big One, nor as expensive as the Pearl One. And so far (this will be the 4th NAOBF) the crowds aren’t nearly as obnoxious.

Plus the beer selection looks fantastic. Plus it’s going to be in the 90s all weekend, so stave off dehydration this weekend by enjoying cold organic beer.

The North American Organic Brewers Festival (NAOBF) returns to Portland’s Overlook Park on Friday, June 27th, 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. • Saturday, June 28th, 12:00 to 9:00 p.m. • Sunday, June 29th, 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. The event is Free and open to the public. Participation in beer tasting is $5 for a reusable, yet compostable, cornstarch tasting glass and samples are $1 a ticket. A full glass is 4 tickets. Strong beers (over 8% alcohol by volume) and certain imported beers will cost more. Children are welcome with guardians. Service animals only. Beer sales are restricted to people 21 years and older with valid ID. Discount of $1 off of tasting glass with validated MAX ticket or three cans of food (preferably organic) for the Oregon Food Bank. No Parking is provided for this event, making Tri-Met’s MAX Yellow line the easiest way to attend.

First Timbers tidbits of 2008

January 11, 2008 by Dave Knows 4 Comments

TimbersThe Timbers season is still a few months away, but the anticipation continues to build as new bits of information trickle out.

  • The big news, though it’s still not official, is that the ancient carpet in PGE Park is being replaced with FieldTurf. The old stuff might be torn out as early as today. [Update: it’s now official]
  • Fox Soccer Channel has announced their 2008 USL broadcast lineup. This is in addition to the 5 games the Timbers have on Fox Sports Net. The Timbers make four appearances in the regular season. The best part is that this includes three road games:

Friday May 30 Portland @ Montreal 5:00 pm
Friday June 27 Portland @ Carolina 5:00 pm
Thursday August 7 Seattle @ Portland 8:00 pm
Friday August 22 Portland @ Vancouver 8:00 pm
