Mississippi Marketplace, the NASL Timbers, and Bill Walton

July 15, 2009 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Speaking as a former, and future (come winter), resident of the neighborhood, the new food cart pod opening soon on Mississippi at Skidmore will likely be a great addition to the neighborhood – certainly better than a weed-filled vacant lot. Christened Mississippi Marketplace, the stated goal of the endeavor is to create a vibrant, affordable & high quality place for local food vendors helping to sustain the local food market.

In Saturday’s Oregonian article, Karen Brooks describes the developer and owner of the property, Roger Goldingay, as a former professional soccer player [who] has lived in the neighborhood for eight years and, until recently, owned the John Palmer House across the street.

Goldengay_RogerThis description piqued the interest of some Portland soccer fans. Via LendogPDX on Twitter I learned that Roger Goldingay is not merely a former professional soccer player, but a former NASL Portland Timber – he played forward for the 1975 and 1976 NASL Portland Timbers.

Roger did not, apparently, score any goals, or even tally one assist in his time here, and he even missed the team photo session in 1976, though he does appear in 1975’s. According to Bill Walton, yes, that Bill Walton, Roger Goldingay’s career was derailed by his own teammate who was worried that Roger was going to outplay him and ultimately take his job. I’d like to learn the rest of the story, but Bill Walton does not share it with us.

neverlookbackRoger Goldingay is also an Evergreen alumnus, and somewhat of a renaissance man; he authored the book Never Look Back. Amazon provides a couple awesome excerpts:

We sat in awed silence, metamorphosing from points of light to prehistoric man fascinated with flame. For eternal nanoseconds we flitted back and forth. One moment we were the fire, no more than ethereal flame. Nothing but a flicker of light and everlasting energy. The next moment we sat outside it and saw the flame as God, our beneficiary, our protector from woolly behemoths. In pagan disorder we danced around the fire all night, our hearts racing with discovery

She reached for me and her lips replaced Karla’s. It was the first time I kissed her. It was a deep passionate kiss, the juice of her mouth hot, her tongue exploring. A moment later, I felt Karla kissing my neck, her busy fingers unbuttoning my shirt and rubbing my chest. I reached for her breasts and found them free and loose under her T-shirt. Diane straddled my thigh and rubbed her vee on my leg through our blue jeans.

I’m going to hunt down a copy.

Scheduling conflict 2011

May 1, 2009 by Dave Knows 5 Comments

timbersvstrailblazersAt the Timbers game last night, briefly at half time, the Blazer game was shown on the jumbotron. We learned, those of us without fancy Blackberries and iPhones, the Blazers were down nearly 20 in the fourth quarter.

I’m a season ticket holder for both teams, and so a part of me was relieved I didn’t have to decide between a Saturday game 7 at the Rose Garden and a second match up in 3 days against Carolina at PGE Park. But as I contemplated the possibly developing dilemma earlier this week, I found myself leaning towards attending the Timbers match over a Blazer game 7 playoff game, even if it rains. The realization struck me that I do have a hierarchy of favorite teams, and the Timbers are at the top.

But in 2011, when the Timbers make their MLS debut, I anticipate severe scheduling conflicts, as the Blazers are destined to win the NBA championship that year (even less optimistic/prescient fans will have to concede the Blazers are likely to advance past the first round fairly regularly for the next several years). I have decided I will skip an early season Timbers match for a Blazer NBA finals game, but for a 2nd round game? The conference finals?

I’ll cross that bridge in 2011.

Never underestimate the Trail Blazers

April 17, 2009 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

Trail BlazersA headline somewhere on Oregonlive yesterday called Blazer fans giddy, which I think is the perfect word to describe the general feeling. I grew up in Portland, so the playoffs were a regular rite of spring throughout my childhood (as was a first round exit most years). From 1977 through 2003 the Blazers only missed the playoffs one season (1981-2). But it’s been five long, disorienting, years since we’ve tasted the playoffs, and those last few times left a bad taste. This year’s playoff appearance is particularly sweet – the team is in the upper echelon of the Western Conference ahead of schedule, we have a young team still getting better, and they’re playing so goddamn well right now.

Back in October, before the 2008-2009 season began, I guessed that the Trail Blazers would go 49-33. At the time I felt my prediction was too conservative, but very few people were predicting a 50 win season, and with the Western Conference’s parity in the top half it seemed reasonably optimistic to hope for a 7th or 8th seed. I had correctly predicted a 41-41 record the previous season.

Clearly I underestimated the Trail Blazers this year. And I’m not the only one who’s glad to be wrong.

A few commenters on my October post also made their predictions. Let’s see how prescient, or not, they were . . .

  • Some character named Mizzzzzz scoffed: almost 50 wins? here’s hoping! I suspect about 44 wins-38 losses.
  • Drew was slightly more optimistic, I think they would win at least 47 games, but then he commented again but they won’t make the playoffs because the west is too strong. Just saying I’m not dissing my favorite team
  • Diane came the closest, with I think they’ll win at least 52.

I hope Mr. Mizzzzzz is enjoying his heaping serving of crow. And Drew, be more optimistic! Diane wins the Dave Knows Trail Blazers record prediction contest this year – Congrats! 😉

My prediction for round 1 is Blazers in 7.

I’ve seen optimistic predictions that the Blazers will win the series in 6, but I give Houston more credit than that. I expect Aaron Brooks (a Duck) and Von Wafer (former Blazer) to play well in Portland. They might be the catalyst for Houston taking a game in Portland. And Yao’s tough to defend – we’ll see how the refs call things. I do fully expect Artest to do something stupid, like get kicked out of a game or get a suspension; whatever he does Blazers, don’t leave the bench!

So anyway.

Go Blazers!

All Weekend

filmedbybike09The 2009 Filmed by Bike film festival kicks off Friday, April 17 with an Opening Night Throwdown – a street party on Clinton Street between 25th and 26th with a beer garden, entertainers, music and more. It runs from 6pm until 1am. Tickets for the films go on sale a half hour before each showing, and you can have a beer while you’re waiting in line. Thanks to Mike Vogel for the ticket tips, and make sure to check out his film at the festival, Claire Rides a Bike!

Far PostNow that spring is here and the rain has stopped (ha!), you probably need shiny new soccer gear. Far Post Soccer Supply‘s annual spring sale is going on right now. Lots of stuff is on sale. In particular club replica apparel is 30% off, and national club apparel is 40% off. Sale ends Sunday, April 19th.

comicfest09200Calling all comics nerds! As you no doubt already know and have already blogged about (nb: all nerds have blogs) the 6th annual Stumptown Comics Fest is this weekend at the Doubletree Hotel (1000 NE Multnomah). Check out the exhibitors and guests here, and the schedule here.

Saturday

recordstoreday09Support your local record store Saturday, April 18th: it’s Record Store Day. Record Store Day is an international celebration of independent record stores. To participate a store must be a physical retailer whose product line consists of at least 50% music retail, whose company is not publicly traded and whose ownership is at least 70% located in the state of operation. OregonLive’s Pop Music blog tells you all about it here, and Mayor Sam Adams has officially proclaimed Saturday to be Record Store Day in Portland. Find local participating stores here.

nightowlrecordFor even more vinyl Saturday head up to upper Hawthorne for the Night Owl Record Sale at the Portland Eagles Lodge (4904 SE Hawthorne Blvd).

Portland’s Night Owl Record Show is the nation’s first night time record show. Twice a year since October of 2003 music fans and record fiends from Portland, the Pacific Northwest and as far away as Florida, New York and Japan, have gathered for a funky time buying, selling and trading records. The Eagles provide food, drink and pool to keep things from getting boring.

Sale runs from 5 to 9pm Saturday, April 18th. Admission is $2 Admission ($15 early bird). Records, food, and drinks will be available. Hat tip to Justin (Dusty Nuggets and Hall of Records) for the reminder!

eatmobile2009
Eat Mobile, the food cart fest, is back again this year in a new location – the Disjecta space at 8371 N. Interstate Avenue. It runs Saturday, April 18 from 5:30 to 9:30 pm.
