Weekdays at noon on channel 12

February 28, 2009 by Dave 5 Comments

perrymasonchannel12Music affected me more powerfully as a child. The theme to M*A*S*H, for example, depressed me; I was not surprised years later to learn the piece is called Suicide is Painless. The intro music to Perry Mason also had a powerful effect – it filled me with dread. But still, I have pleasant memories of watching Perry Mason while sipping 7 Up and nibbling saltines (my mom’s remedy for tummy aches) on childhood sick days. Mom usually folded clothes beside me, in my vague memories at least. The intro music to Perry Mason, as well as 7 Up and saltines, function upon me like Proust’s petite madeleines dipped in tea.*

Until I read this article, however, I had no idea this may be a particularly Portland memory. Except for 10 months in 1974-75 when it started a half hour later, Perry Mason has been shown on channel 12 at noon every weekday since 1970 – the year before I was born.

Most Portlanders knew exactly what this blog post was about when they read the headline.

February 28-March 1: Art perambulation, chintzy crap, and chowder

February 27, 2009 by Dave 3 Comments

sepdxartwalkLike art? Walking? Southeast Portland? Then you’ll probably enjoy this weekend’s Southeast Area Artwalk.

The SE Area ARTWalk will allow you the opportunity to go on a FREE, self-guided tour by visiting the studios, home workspaces, galleries, host homes and businesses within the “walkable/bikeable/busable” boundaries of SE 9th – SE 41st & SE Hawthorne to SE Powell Blvd.

Check the website for more details.

saturdaymarketlogoOver the winter hiatus the Portland Saturday Market vendors have been busily replenishing their supplies of “arts” and “crafts” to sell to unsuspecting visitors to our fair city. The market reopens this Saturday.

I’m only half not serious; there’s some great stuff at Saturday Market. If you’re looking for a tie dyed shirt for that 60s-themed party, or your cat is in withdrawal and needs a fix, or you just crave deep-fried bread dredged through cinnamon and sugar, Saturday Market is the place for you. Every Saturday and Sunday until Xmas eve, and starting this weekend! (via Portland Octopus)

chowdachallengeNew Old Lompoc’s Fifth Quadrant (3901 N Williams) hosts the 3rd Annual Chowder Challenge this Saturday, from noon-6pm.

With admission ($10) you get the opportunity to sample chowders prepared by a bunch of local chowder purveyors (Alameda Brewhouse, EaT: An Oyster Bar, 5th Quadrant, Hedge House, Hopworks Urban Brewery, Horse Brass Pub, Laurelwood Public House, Lucky Labrador Brewpub, Morrison Hotel, New Old Lompoc, Oaks Bottom Public House, and Rogue Ales) and then vote for your favorites.

February 26: Hall of Records throws a party

February 24, 2009 by Dave Leave a Comment

Hall of Records is a Portland record store, coffeehouse, and bar with a fantastic vinyl collection, a great business plan, and energetic owners. Sounds like a great place to down a pint while perusing the vinyl, eh?

Alas, the one thing Hall of Records does not have yet is a location.

But this Thursday, February 26, at 7:30pm that problem is temporarily solved:

Hall of Records is throwing a record party/DJ dance party at It’s a Beautiful Pizza (3342 SE Belmont).

DJ Standin’ 8s will be mixing while you dig for records (mainly soul, funk, jazz and breaks from the 60s and 70s) and enjoy a beer. The party is true to the (eventual) store concept: blending records with beer.

Review of the Mount Angel Wurstfest: Just rename it Bestfest!

February 23, 2009 by Dave 7 Comments

UPDATE: 2011 Wurstfest is February 12-13!

Wurstfest is the Best fest!Giant Spaten banners fluttered in the breeze outside the Oktoberfest Community Building (500 S Wilco Hwy) in Mount Angel Saturday afternoon. The melodic aspirations of an amplified accordion greeted us as we stepped from the car. The scent of sausage and sauerkraut beckoned.

In the past if you found yourself craving Bavarian-style revelry in the dead of winter, you were out of luck. But those Oktoberfest-minded geniuses in Mount Angel came up with a remedy this year: Wurstfest, a celebration of the mighty German (wurst) sausage.

In the few hours we were there the requisitely lederhosen-clad Greg Meier Alpine Quartet provided the requisite polka music.

At 3pm, after eine, zwei, drei biere, we joined everyone in the beer hall to sing happy birthday to Oregon, in English and then in German.

We tried the fittingly famous frickadelwurst, with sauerkraut and onions!

What the heck is frickadelwurst?

Besides fun to say, Mount Angel Sausage Company‘s fricadelwurst is a spicy chicken sausage with many different spices that create a medley of different delicious flavors that will explode in your mouth.

Indeed.

The beer was fantastic; Spaten’s Premium Helles, Optimator, Helles Bock, Pilsner, and Franziskaner Hefeweizen were available. The glühwein was good; almost as good as mine.

This was the inaugural Mount Angel Wurstfest. From what I saw, it was clearly a success.

Let’s hope it becomes an annual tradition.
