In this bicycle friendly city, I’d rather walk

February 21, 2009 by Dave Knows 12 Comments

bikesyieldtopedsIn 1993 I was a broke college student unable to replace a stolen bike and living several miles from campus. I started taking the bus.

Since then I’ve mostly lived and worked downtown or along major transit routes. My car free and bike free arrangement has mostly served me well, and I know the Portland bus lines as well as anyone.

But a couple years ago, as I approached my late-mid-thirties, I got too old for retired from playing indoor soccer and figured I should find a low impact activity to stay in shape. I started to think about getting a bicycle. Maybe I could save money too by forgoing my spendy monthly bus pass.

I researched, asked my bicycle-nerd friends for advice, shopped around, and eventually spent about a grand on one of these babies.

At the time, I lived about a mile and half from work. Riding a mile and a half on flat city streets on a bicycle takes less time than driving a car, and requires about the same physical effort. A coworker lived on one side of the West Hills and rode to work on the other side. His bicycle commute was a workout. Mine, on the other hand, was a joke.

And then I had to contend with finding bike parking, and deciding about rain pants, fenders, or spending the day with a wet butt and pant legs, or bringing a change of clothes. It was a big hassle.

And having relied on TriMet and my own two feet for so long, I was used to not rushing. On a bike, you have to rush; you’re traffic after all.

I don’t like being traffic.

I started walking to and from work again. Walking was much more pleasant, and better exercise given the distance I had to cover.

Now, if it’s under 3 miles it’s walking distance. Over that I take the bus.

I have a different bike now, a $200 single-speed beauty with coaster brakes. On a nice day, I sometimes take it out for a spin.

But most of the time, I’d rather walk.

wurstfestMount Angel, famous for its annual Oktoberfest, is branching out this winter with a pre-Lent carnival of sausage: Wurstfest, a celebration of the mighty German (wurst) sausage.

CincyStreetcar Blog, which recently highlighted some uncanny similarities between Portland and Cincinnati, has just completed posting a multi-part series (adapted from an earlier series on CityKin) about Portland’s rail transit system.

Portland Observations – Part 1: Portland rail transit basics.

Portland Observations – Part 2: The streetcar and how it works.

Portland Observations – Part 3: Development near rail transit and who rides.

Culinary road to Portland, in the Oakland Tribune

February 18, 2009 by Dave Knows 12 Comments

As a commenter pointed out recently, it is believed Portland was built on an ancient unicorn burial ground.

Next time you, a Portlander, are interviewed by a reporter from afar, throw that fantastic fact into the conversation, and act as if you believe it. The goal is that someday we’ll be reading in the New York Times about Portland’s grungy flannel hip urban greenness and we’ll also learn that many people believe Portland was built on an ancient unicorn burial ground.

If you think an ancient unicorn burial ground is too far fetched, suggest some alternatives in the comments!

Laurel Miller’s article in the Oakland Tribune, Fork in the Road: Culinary Road to Portland, introduces the reader to boilerplate Portland (emphasis mine):

I have a certain affinity for knit hats, inked skin, loud music and creative types. So it is no surprise that I love Portland, Ore.

When I visited, I stayed at the funky, uber-hip and uber-Portland Ace Hotel, located in the Pearl District.

Grab a seat at the zinc bar or at one of the communal farmhouse tables, and watch the team of tatted, beanied, vintage T-shirted cooks gracefully orchestrate the bustling lunch and dinner service.

Anyway, it goes on and on.

Actually in the second quote above, you’ll notice that the Ace Hotel is “located in the Pearl District”. This is news to me, as I never considered SW Stark Street to be part of the Pearl District. I think I’ve read this before in one of these Portland travelogues; perhaps the marketing department at the Ace Hotel has their own unicorn burial grounds tale to tell . . .
