MLSVia SoccercityUSA: Very Important MLS/Timbers Announcement Friday

What: Rally and Press Conference Announcement

When: 9:30 a.m., Friday March 20

Where: Portland Hilton
921 SW Sixth Avenue, Portland Oregon

What we need to do: We need to take what we did with the MLS to PDX rally and be even louder, prouder, more drums, and even more noise. It looks like this is going to be the CELEBRATION we have all been waiting for! Our goal is 300 people for this event wearing your green and white plus as many scarves as we can muster. Arrive early to claim your flag, banner, drum etc. As always the Timbers Army and Timbers fans will play a prominent part in any announcement.
Do whatever it takes to join us.

Major League Soccer (MLS) Rumors has more.

10 (plus 3) books about Portland

March 18, 2009 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

Yesterday Reading Local, a blog that covers the Portland book scene, posted a list of 10 books from local authors that will get you caught up on all the things you should know about Portland then and now: Portland 101-Learn About Portland In 10 Books

I’ve read most of them, and plan to follow the rest of their recommendations. I would like to expand their list a bit though, and recommend these too:

  • An Architectural Guidebook to Portland by Bart King. Exactly what the title says, and it’s well written and researched. (Also the author is responsible for two of the more entertaining local blogs: Unexpectedly Bart! and El Ilusorio Blog de Rudy.)
  • City Limits: Walking Portland’s Boundary by David Oates. Read my review: Portland’s real edge.
  • Red Hot and Rollin’: A Retrospection of the Portland Trail Blazers’ 1976-77 Championship Season Edited by Matt Love. Read my mini-review (second one down): Harry Potter free zone; some books for the rest of us.

The Ainsworth Age at Cafe Unknown

Ainsworth building photo - from Cafe UnknownDan Hackenow has a great post up on Cafe Unknown about 19th century Portland Banker John C. Ainsworth, the bank he founded, and the beautiful Victorian gem he built, that, in the 1950s, was deemed less important (i.e. lucrative) than a parking lot.

For fifty-nine years, the northwest corner of Third and Oak has been the site of a parking lot. For the seventy-four years prior to that, it was occupied by something more; a center of finance and trade, then, art and music. The Ainsworth Building.

Read the whole post: The Ainsworth Age.

The photo, via the Cafe Unknown post, is by Marion Dean Ross, and it resides in the University of Oregon collection.
