Rainy in Portland – Let’s try the coast

March 16, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Other than driving a short way down I-5 to take in the sausage fest last month, Heather and I wintered in town. Snowmageddon, the snowpocalypse, moving, and the million compulsory trips to Swedish Hell pretty much precluded any out-of-town forays.

But Sunday morning, hopped up on Lucky Charms and strong coffee, we braved the rain and jumped in the car. We were thinking maybe we’d swing by the Tillamook cheese factory, but we did that last year. We settled on a southern loop this time.

March 14: Pie and Math Rock

March 14, 2009 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

pidayPi Day is the portly mathematician’s excuse to eat pi(e) all day: pizza pie, meat pie, Eskimo pie, apple pie, etc., oh and also to celebrate the mathematical constant π.

Since I am not a mathematician (nor portly, thank you very much), I just celebrate the pastry.

vanholiday200Coincidentally, today is also a Van Holiday! I wrote about this nascent holiday last month, when it fell on Valentines Day and Oregon’s Birthday. The point of Van Holiday is to celebrate your inner rock star; so I think it’s only appropriate on Pi Day to celebrate your inner math rock star. I think your geek rock star is acceptable too, if like me, you find math rock a little too esoteric.

But in any case I’ll be celebrating my Pi Day and Van Holiday by going to a 1 year old’s birthday party. W00t!

The story of the sign

dsc03019If you’ve crossed the Hawthorne bridge lately you’ve probably noticed the giant rooftop XOXO sign beside the west bound approach lanes, which used to trumpet Pabst Blue Ribbon. During the media orgy over Sam Adams’ trouble earlier this year it said Forgive, a nice sentiment (photo courtesy Mile73.com).

Read the story of the sign at Oregonlive.com – Artist plants one on downtown-bound commuters

“I want people to feel a little better before they get downtown and start thrashing around looking for parking,” said Ilan Laks.

He put the message up about a month ago, before Valentine’s Day. The other side, which is visible traveling eastbound, tells commuters to “Dream.”

“People are leaving downtown and heading home to sleep,” Laks said. “We’re all stressed so I’m reminding them to dream.”

Dead Whale Closes Oregon Beach

FLORENCE, Ore. — The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department shut down an Oregon beach Sunday because of a dead whale.

Heceta Head State Scenic Viewpoint and the Devil’s Elbow Beach, located north of Florence, will be closed until further notice because of the fin whale carcass.

March 7-8: Booze, cheap fashion, and links

newdealvodkaDid you miss your chance to tour the New Deal Distillery during Travel Oregon’s Oregon Bounty last fall?

Read the account of my November visit to New Deal, and then make your way to the distillery’s new tasting room Saturday, March 7th or Saturday, March 14. It’s open from 11am-4pm.

sameunderneath-logoI used to live next door to Sameunderneath when it was on Shaver just west of Mississippi. The owners and the employees were always fantastically nice, and I loved the clothes’ softness and clean designs. The prices, however, busted my budget. Sameunderneath is going out of business though, and their misfortune is our gain: warehouse sale Saturday only, NW 5th and Couch.

That’s all I got for this weekend (I’ll actually be staying in dealing with this), but Around the Sun and PDX Pipeline have lots more!
