Portland Timbers Roundup (01/27/10)

January 27, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersWelcome to a special Wednesday edition of the Portland Timbers Roundup.

Though traditionally on Friday, I’ve already gathered enough news and bloggage this week for a roundup, plus I want to remind all Portland Timbers supporters to consider attending the Portland City Council Meeting at 2pm today, Wednesday, January 27th, to support MLS to PDX.

After the meeting, head on up to the Bitter End Pub (1981 W Burnside), which is graciously hosting a post-meeting party. See you there!

And now to the roundup . . .

Portland’s soccer history with Timber Jim – KGW‘s Stephanie Stricklen talks with Timbers Jim on Live @ 7

MLS – the right move for the Rose City!! by Kip Kesgard at Oregonlive.com

Now that we have the final version of the PGE Park stadium operating agreement ready for review by the Portland City Council, the final legislative steps are on the horizon. If this deal is approved the stadium construction can begin to turn the facility into a soccer/football stadium. [More]

Portland Timbers cut a new deal by Floyd McKay at Crosscut.com

Rabid Sounders’ fans will have nothing on the Portland faithful if the past is any prediction of the future. I vividly recall being crammed into a packed stadium to watch the NASL Timbers, waiting for Timber Jim to climb a pole and crank up his chainsaw to celebrate a goal. Corny, of course, but certainly as authentic as a moose! [More]

Sights and sounds from the Timbers’ Open Tryouts at PortlandTimbers.com

Over the weekend, the Timbers held their annual open tryout. Nearly 90 participants from all parts of the Northwest, the United States and even the world, competed through two days of drills and full-field scrimmages. [More]

Timbers Notebook: USL veteran Andrew Gregor retires at PortlandTimbers.com

Earlier this week, former Timbers midfielder Andrew Gregor decided it was time to hang up the boots and retire from the game after 11 pro seasons. The Portland, Ore., native’s accomplished career included three seasons with his hometown club. [More]

Timbers Stadium Construction Update at Dropping Timber

BOOM! Our correspondents are hard at work across the city and the world, bringing you the latest Portland Timbers information. BAM! Whether it is your league goal scoring leader in India, or your number one draft pick get freaky in the mirror, you can count on us to be there holding up the mirror. We report, you decide. [More]

I call this the Doug Zanger section:

My Portland Timbers Tryout by Doug Zanger by Doug Zanger at PDX.FM

I’m not exactly sure when (or why) I decided to sign up for the Portland Timbers open tryout. It was most likely, a quick, “why the heck not” kind of thing. But, it actually did fall in to the theme of my 2010 resolutions: try a few new things here and there. [More]

My Portland Timbers Tryout by Doug Zanger by Zanger at OurPDX

This past weekend was my tryout for the Portland Timbers. As mentioned before, there were a few things that were standing in the way of my potential run for glory — mostly my age: 40. [More]

And I heartily recommend listening to Doug Zanger’s Life Portlandic weekdays 9am on PDX.FM Channel Two. In particular episodes 15 and 16 in which he recounts more Timbers tryout fun.

Happy Australia Day!

January 26, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

We had a fantastic Pie Day this past weekend. Heather’s pork pie took first place in the savory category at a Pie & Pints party. And for dinner tonight we plan to enjoy the second pie from the award winning batch.

Pacific PieThis is a round about way of saying that we’ve had plenty of pie lately, so we won’t be stopping by Portland’s Pacific Pie Company (609 SE Ankeny) today to celebrate Australia Day. But if we had room we would definitely be checking it out – Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!, Oi! Oi! Oi!

Pacific Pie Company specializes in handmade, Australian style savory pies, pasties and other Aussie treats, so it’s only natural they want to share pies (and Anzac biscuits and beer!) with us on Australia’s 4 of July (sort of).

From the newsletter:

On Tuesday, January 26 we’ll be celebrating Australia Day at the shop! We’ll be open from 10am – 9pm, and there will be specials throughout the day, including…

The debut of our Potato Pie – a beef pie topped with homemade mashed potatoes
Free Anzac biscuits
Free tastings of Laurelwood beer

Bring your friends + family for lunch or dinner! We’re also serving up the tasty new Pulled Pork Pastie – homemade with Sweet Briar Farms pork and served with a side of spicy coleslaw.

You can find more information on Pacific Pie’s website and twitter feed.

January 30: Pinball Pedal

January 25, 2010 by Dave Knows 2 Comments

Pinball is one of my favorite participatory sports (juggling would be the other), so the upcoming Pinball Pedal is one of the first bicycle tours to interest me. Though not as ironic as the Tweed Ride which occurs the same day, bikes, beer, and pinball make for a quintessential Portland-style event.

From the rundown on Yelp event page:

When: Jan. 30 4PM
Where: Pedal Bike Tours, 2249 N Williams Ave., Portland OR, 97227
Who: 21 and over- we’ll be visiting bars
Cost: Free- Bring quarters for Pinball and money for beverages and snacks
Distance: 6-7 miles

Pedal Bike Tours is presumably the group behind this tour, though I for one can find absolutely nothing about it on their website.. See Todd’s comment below for more information!

Help Select the next Bus Poems

January 23, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Literary Arts LogoIf you ride TriMet you are familiar with the work of Literary Arts, even if you don’t attend any of the Portland Art & Lectures, or have experience with Writers in the Schools, or follow the Oregon Book Awards Author Tour. Literary Arts is the organization behind the Poetry in Motion campaign, which places poetry placards inside buses and MAX trains, mostly on the space above the windows that would otherwise display advertisements or TriMet admonitions against bad trimetiquette. Thousands of TriMet passengers see them every day. On many snail-paced commutes in an overcrowded bus, those poems have helped me preserve my sanity when I’ve forgotten my iPod.

And now, for the next installment of Poetry in Motion, Literary Arts is asking for our help selecting the poems.

Because of the incredible generosity of a host of supporters, we will add thousands of new poems to our Poetry in Motion program this April. But, we need your help in choosing the work. Please take the online survey and vote on which poems get chosen and installed on hundreds of TriMet buses and trains.

VOTE HERE.

Visit the Poetry in Motion webpage for more information, and check out the archive of all the poetry cards from 1997 through 2007.

January 23-24: Pie Day, Snuggies, Haiti Benefit with Chervona, and Portland Revels’ Pub Sing

January 22, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Saturday, January 23rd is National Pie Day, according to the American Pie Council. What this means for us is summed up in this article by David Sarasohn at Oregonlive.com: Ready for National Pie Day? Here’s where to go for your piece.

Unlike some other American holidays, which require elaborate fireworks or parades, National Pie Day can be celebrated with only a fork. Portland has a deep dish of places to celebrate, and the number has recently been rising.

The article includes information on special Pie Day deals at local coffee shops and bakeries, including Random Order Coffeehouse (1800 NE Alberta), Baker & Spice (6330 SW Capitol Hwy), and Pacific Pie Co. (609 SE Ankeny).

Also taking place Saturday, January 23rd:

Snuggie Pub Crawl The 2010 PDX.FM Portland Snuggie Pub Crawl

Apparently Snuggie Pub Crawls are all the rage. Those in Chicago and San Francisco have received media coverage, and there’s even a website dedicated to the events, www.snuggypubcrawls.com (blog is here), which lists dozens of past and future Snuggie pub crawls throughout the country.

The Groove Movement Fundraiser for Haiti, with Chervona

Join The Groove Movement this Saturday, January 23rd at the Mount Tabor Theater (4811 SE Hawthorne) for a benefit for Haiti earthquake relief.

Chervona headlines, one of my favorite local bands since I saw them perform at last summer’s Polish Festival.

Then on Sunday, January 24th:

Celebrate Robert Burns‘ birthday with the Portland Revels‘ Winter Pub Sing at the Lucky Labrador Beer Hall (1945 NW Quimby)

From 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Lucky Lab Beer Hall, [the Portland Revels will] sing songs from the Scottish tradition of work songs, lullabies, children’s songs, songs of love and of Bonnie Prince Charley. Songs like “The Work of the Weavers,” “Sae Will We Yet,” “Loch Lomond,” “Broom of the Cowdenknowes,” “Bonnie Dundee,” ” Mairi’s Wedding,” “Dumbarton’s Drums,” and many others. All songs will be led and there’ll be chorus sheets so no one’s left out.

The suggested donation is $10 per adult, $5 for kids. Reserve a place by calling Dick Lewis (503-282-6004 or ra_lewis@comcast.net).
