March 18: Gems & Giants (Final Show!)

March 15, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Last Gems and Giants at Jade LoungeThis Thursday, March 18th is your final opportunity to witness DJs Standing 8 and Clarence Duffy in action at the Jade Lounge (2342 SE Ankeny), during the final Gems & Giants: Only the Finest in Soul and Funk. Show starts at 7:30pm.

Why is this the last show? Justin and Katie’s Hall of Records is taking shape.

Exciting things are afoot at Hall of Records (3342 SE Belmont).

That’s right, they have an address!

In couple more months they’ll be opening the doors to Portland’s only boutique vinyl shop, coffeehouse & beer bar specializing in Soul, Funk, Jazz & Rare Groove!

Traipse on over to the blog to find out more on the progress. Hall of Records will open soon, no doubt hosting many a Standing 8 and Clarence Duffy reunion.

March 17: St. Patty’s Day Killingsworth Crawl

March 15, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

It’s not difficult to find something to do on St. Patrick’s Day in Portland – large tents have been erected in the usual spots.

But if you are looking for something more interesting, you might want to check out the St. Patty’s Day Killingsworth Crawl.

From the Facebook event page:

Celebrate the luck of the Irish and hit up Killingsworth’s finest! A token buys you green beer, wine or housemade yummy soup at Saraveza. You can also turn your tokens in at the Red Fox (Irish Stew, St. Patty’s Drink Special), Ducketts Public House (Well Cocktail, Draft Beer, Appetizer), Eddie’s Flat Iron Pizza (Draft Beer, Slice of Pizza, House Salad), Hop & Vine (Paddy’s Girl Shot, Guinness, Irish Sausage Roll), Beaterville Bar (Green Salad, Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, Draft Beer), Sagittarius (Chips & Salsa, Draft Beer, Well Cocktail) or Yorgo’s (Hummus Plate, Draft Beer, Well Cocktail).

Purchase your tokens now (or on St Patty’s!) at Saraveza or the Hop & Vine. 5 tokens/$18 or 10 tokens/$30. Killingsworth Crawl Map w/ redeemable items included.

Update: According to commenter Elisabeth [thanks!], the new Lucky Lab Taproom (1700 N Killingsworth) has also joined the fun!

Dave Goes: Silver Falls State Park

March 15, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

We hit the road Sunday morning. Our destination was Silver Falls State Park, Oregon’s largest at 9000 acres, and home to an awful lot of water falling off cliffs.

Upper North Falls

From the park brochure [careful: huge PDF]:

The falls tumble over thick basalt lava flows resting on softer, older rock.

The softer layers beneath the basalt eroded over time and created natural pathways behind some of the falls. Look up and see if you can spot the many tree “chimneys,” or casts while you walk behind North Falls. These formed when lava engulfed living trees, causing the wood to disintegrate.

Heather had never visited this park, and I hadn’t since I was a kid. We’d already reserved a camping spot at the park later this summer, so we thought it’d be a good idea to see our campsite in person, and to get out of town for the day.

We took I-5 down to Woodburn, then Highway 214 to the park. Our first stop was the North Falls parking lot, where we paid a $3 day use fee and stretched our legs. It was a short, one-way hike to the Upper North Falls, pictured above. We returned to the trailhead and struck out on another short hike, to find one of the big falls.

Trees

Parts of Silver Falls State Park were constructed by Civilian Conservation Corps workers in the 1930s. My guess is that the (clearly non-ADA compliant) staircase below was their handiwork.

North Falls Staircase

The staircase was part of a switchback on the trail to the North Falls. Falling 136 feet, the North Falls are friggin impressive. So impressive that I forgot to take a photo of them . . . from the front. Yup, the trail goes behind the falls.

Under the North Falls

To give you an idea of how big the cave is under the falls, take a look at the photo below. You’ll see on the right, just below the middle what looks like a tiny bench. That bench, my friends, is a full human size bench!

Human Size Bench

As I sat on that bench, I took the photo below:

Here are a few more shots of the North Falls, from behind them.

[Heather took some good photos of these falls from the front. She also was armed with a better camera than my iPhone. Her post is here!]

Next stop was the South Falls area. We took a gander at where we would be camping this summer, then proceeded to the most popular (judging by the size of the parking lot; fortunately almost empty this mild winter day) part of the park. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the Historic South Falls Lodge here, and there are nice grassy fields and impressive shelters for picnics. The South Falls are a short walk too.

South Falls

There’s a trail behind these falls too, but we’re saving that exercise for our camping trip. We did make our way to the top of the falls, however. How’s your vertigo?

March 24: Back Fence PDX

March 12, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Back Fence PDXLucky (or unlucky) Bastards is the theme of the March 24th edition of Back Fence PDX.

We have a former casino dealer, a wayward traveler, game show contestant and other lucky (or unlucky) bastards telling true 8-10 minute true tales. No notes, no memorization, just a mic and Portland’s best audience at The Mission Theater.

The official lineup includes writer and MTV producer and director Arthur Bradford, Mercury reporter Sarah Mirk, and Love in the Dump Chute co-host Meagan Kate.

So how exactly does this work? It’s like this:

Our Back Fence Storytelling event is the kissing cousin to San Francisco’s Porchlight Storytelling Series. It is an evening with seven people telling true, unmemorized ten-minute stories based on the month’s theme. The stories must not have been performed publicly prior to their Back Fence PDX telling.

Heather and had a great time at the last Back Fence PDX production, Entertainment for People (not least because we finally met Lizzy of Lizzy Dishes, in person in the audience!). One of the highlights was Arthur Bradford’s presentation, which included footage of and the stories behind How’s Your News, a show he wrote, produced, and directed for MTV. He’s part of the lineup on the 24th. All the presenters were fantastic, so I expect this batch of story tellers won’t disappoint either. Free cupcakes from Saint Cupcake made the rounds at intermission, and looks like we’re in for that treat again on the 24th. We’re not going to miss this show.

Tickets are available online (only $10 until the 15th – that’s Monday! – then $12 after that) or at the door ($14) at the Mission Theater (1624 NW Glisan) on Wednesday, March 24th (21 and over only). Doors will open at 6pm for food and drink, show starts at 7:30.
