March 11: Mt. Tabor Brewing Release Party

March 11, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Mt Tabor BrewingHead on out to the Canton Grill (2610 SE 82nd) this Thursday, March 11th for the Mt. Tabor Brewing Release Party!

You can finally taste the Dragon Lounge Pale Ale as well as the Qwest Porter. Happy Hour from 4-6 with beer specials and appetizers in the bar. T-Shirts will be on sale and if you buy a pint you get a raffle ticket for the hourly shirt giveaway. Should be a great time and looking forward to seeing many of you there.

Mt Tabor Brewing is a small batch neighborhood brewery, focused on serving the residents of Mt Tabor, Montavilla, and surrounding neighborhoods. You can find out a bit more about the brewers on the Canton Grill website:

Founded on the east side of Mount Tabor, Brian Maher and Eric Surface are the brewers behind Mt. Tabor Brewing. They’ve poured their passion for beer into kegs to share with friends, family and the neighborhood. What better place to start than a neighborhood joint that has been around for over sixty years, the Canton Grill?

The release party goes from 4pm until 9pm, with happy hour specials from 4pm-6pm!

For more background on this rather obscure brewery, I recommend reading the interview with the brewers by David Westbrook’s at the Montavilla neighborhood blog on Oregonlive.

Timbers Army Establishes 107 Independent Supporters’ Trust

March 11, 2010 by Dave Knows 3 Comments

107 Independent Supporters' TrustAs always, to join the Timbers Army, all you have to do is show up at matches and bleed green and yellow.

But you now have a new opportunity to participate: join the 107 – an Independent Supporters’ Trust.

The 107 Independent Supporters’ Trust is the machinery behind the Timbers Army. It supports soccer in and around Portland, Oregon, from the grass roots to the highest professional level. It fuels the Army and supports soccer charities and soccer events in Soccer City USA.

This new group, conjured up by the fans and established by a core group of hard working Timbers fans, will be involved in planning tifo, bus trips to away matches, and charitable work. The trust is currently pursuing tax-exempt 501(c)(6) status with the IRS.

The 107ist was publicly launched yesterday on the Timbers Army website. The first question addressed in the announcement: What is 107ist?

Much as the atmosphere of a soccer match resembles a college football game, an IST is kind of like an alumni boosters club: hard-core fans who want to have a stake in the team they love.

The second question: Why should I join?

The Timbers won’t be the only ones going to a whole new level in 2011. The Army will have its own sections set aside in the newly remodeled PGE Park. There will be a Timbers Army season ticket that puts you in the center of the bedlam.
In 2011, “the greatest football supporters the world has ever seen” are only going to get stronger, louder and prouder.
A 107ist membership is just $20 a year, with the money going to fund the Timbers Army’s effort in supporting the team and in contributing to soccer-related events and charities. And there’s more, of course!

I’m already a member!

Visit the 107ist website to sign up, and to learn about nitty gritty topics like elections, bylaws, and sundry other details.

Portland Booze Blogging

March 10, 2010 by Dave Knows 6 Comments

BoozePortland is home to quite a few artisan distilleries (there’s even a stretch of SE Portland known as Distillery Row), so it’s no surprise there are quite a few local blogs about booze too.

Recently I found a new one, Drink Spirits (first post was a week and half ago), and thought it would be a useful exercise to see how many more I could round up.

Drink Spirits

Topics have included the Ramos Gin Fizz, Small’s Gin, and Bend’s micro distillery movement. The blog is a new project by Portland writer Geoff Kleinman, the man behind On Portland: Entertainment, Arts, Culture and Food.

My next stop was pdx Plate‘s nifty Portland Beer and Booze Blogs reader, where I found a few:

Jeffrey Morgenthaler

Writer and drinker Jeffrey Morgenthaler writes about bartending and mixology from Portland, Oregon. The most recent post has the intriguing title: How to Vomit on Your Keyboard Ten Different Ways

Tasty Libations

Amateur cocktail enthusiast Sylvan Thompson and avid cocktail taster Joy Keen produce this Portland spirits and cocktail blog. Their liquor cabinet puts all but the best-stocked bars to shame!

Liquidity Preference

This is the cocktails, coffee, and commentary blog of Portland based freelance writer, barista, mixologist and magician Jacob Grier. My favorite post recently isn’t about spirits, but must have been inspired by the consumption of spirits: Girl Scout Cookie Fry-Off!

And then to my blogroll where I found a couple more:

Cocktailia

This blog by Kenn Wilson promises classic cocktails, bar reviews, events, and more – and it delivers. A highlight is his cocktail recipes.

Imbibe Unfiltered

Imbibe is a Portland based magazine covering Liquid Culture. The blog is not Portland, nor booze-centric, but it does cover the local booze scene when warranted.

Update: Found another one, via Twitter: @boozenik

The Boozeniks

“A couple of lively lushes who blog about craft distillery news, cocktail recipes and bottle reviews”, from Portland, Oregon

Update: More, thanks to commenters!

Bar Pilot

A Portland Monthly Magazine blog penned by John Chandler, who “has developed an appreciation for a properly stirred cocktail, all manner of beer, smoky single malt scotch, and the odd moment of clarity.”

And visit the Oregon Bartender’s Guild for more blogs and news about Oregon booze!

If there are some I’ve missed, let me know in the comments!
