Time Magazine: Stumptown = New Starbucks?

March 9, 2010 by Dave Knows 8 Comments

Time MagazineIs Stumptown the New Starbucks — Or Better? is the provocative title of a Time Magazine story today by Josh Ozersky.

Coffee aficionados have been asking the question over and over again: is Portland’s Stumptown coffee, the most conspicuous exponent of Coffee’s “Third Wave,” the new Starbucks?

Some of the criticisms of Starbucks expounded by Stumptown’s “charismatic founder”, Duane Sorenson and others in the article are sound. For one thing,

“Coffee beans aren’t supposed to be uniformly dark and shiny,” says John Moore, of Dallis. “Every bean has a level it’s supposed to be roasted to, so that you can taste it. Otherwise it’s like cooking all meat well done.”

And if Stumptown’s success leads to more quality coffee sellers, I’m all for it.*

Read the rest: Is Stumptown the New Starbucks — Or Better?

* I’m somewhat of a Stumptown skeptic, however, and not so sure they’ll lead the way. The proper roast and all the “improved cherry selection and a return to double fermentation” in the world is irrelevant if the coffee isn’t properly brewed from fresh grounds. Ultimately boutique roasters like Stumptown need to learn something Starbucks, or my preferred roaster Peets, have a better handle on: quality control at the cafe.

March 13: Zombotica: Zombies vs. Robots

March 9, 2010 by Dave Knows 4 Comments

ZomboticaZombotica: Zombies vs. Robots takes place this Saturday, March 13th at Dante’s (1 SW 3rd).

It won’t be the end of the world. It will be better.

PDX.FM is behind this event, which promises to blow your mind and your circuits. Come dressed as a zombie or a robot. Tickets are $10, and the price treats you to an extravaganza: five bands, boxing matches, contests, a live broadcast, and costumes!

The boxing matches? That’s you in a bouncy boxing ring, and you may also get the opportunity to duke it out with the likes of Cort Webber of the Cort and Fatboy radio show and Emily Gibson of PDX.FM’s The Meat Show.

The show is a benefit for American Red Cross: attendees are encouraged to bring small items such as toothbrushes, crayons, markers, coloring books, travel-size umbrellas, water bottles, etc. – anything that can be given to people in need of disaster relief.

New Site: Portland Soccer Bars

Portland Soccer Bars ScreenshotPortland Soccer Bars is live!

Two of the most popular posts on Dave Knows Portland are Places to watch English (and world) soccer in Portland, and Italian Soccer Viewing in Portland. The inspiration for Portland Soccer Bars began with them.

With the Timbers season and the 2010 World Cup beginning soon, not to mention the Timbers’ “promotion” to MLS in 2011, new Portland area soccer fans will be coming out of the woodwork. And a lot of them won’t know where to watch matches. Portland Soccer Bars aims to help.

Currently each bar (and cafe and restaurant) listing is organized by name, quadrant, and type of establishment. The site is a work in progress though; more categories will be added (type of food? hours?).

I will update pages for sites as I get more or better information, so please, share your updates and opinions – comments are open on each bar’s listing, and there’s a form on the contact page to submit information about new venues. I imagine this summer, during World Cup, a lot of bars that don’t normally show soccer will be jumping on the bandwagon, if only for a few weeks. Portland Soccer Bars will keep track of them too.

Cheers!

A Singapore website, The Electric New Paper, is reporting that the Timbers have signed 22 year old Nigerian Gabriel Obatola, a former Gombak United striker. The latest news is that Gabriel Obatola is perhaps a trialst: The Game has learned that despite reports the Timbers have NOT signed Nigerian F Gabriel Obatola, but he will train with the team next week (via @strongatnight).
