June 4: Robots Robots Robots

June 3, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Robots Robots Robots, a film and art show, takes place Friday, June 4th at the Tenpod (1111 E Burnside – 3rd floor).

Portland based film archivist Dennis Nyback will be showing rare robot-themed film shorts, including:

The Inventors (1934) in which Technocracy spoofers Stoopnagle and Budd built a Robot that terrorizes a girls school, Techno-Cracked (1933) a Ub Iwerks Flip the Flog cartoon again spoofing Technocracy with a home built runaway Robot, Rosey the Robot (1962) the pilot episode for the Jetsons, The Mechanical Monsters (1941) Superman battles flying robots, Robot Revolution (1980) about modern (at least then) robotics, and more.

Artwork by Damon Eckhoff and Sara Kaltwasser will be on display, some examples of which you can find at Defend The City and and Episode Creative – think terrifying bunnies and weird robotty things!

Art opening starts at 6pm, and the films begin at 9:30pm sharp. Cookies, popcorn, and beer will be provided!

June 7: The Cheese Stands Alone Science Pub

June 3, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Omsi Science PubOMSI’s Science Pub event for June 2010 takes place this Monday the 7th at the Bagdad Theater (3702 SE Hawthorne).

Oregon State University professor of Food Science and Technology Lisbeth Goddiki, Ph.D. presents The Cheese Stands Alone: The Science Behind Oregon’s Acclaimed Artisan Cheeses.

Oregon wine is mighty fine, but, increasingly, no one does cheese like the Beaver State, either. In recent years, Oregon’s specialty artisan cheeses have achieved international acclaim. Oregon’s Rogue River Blue, for instance, was named Best of Show in 2009 in the prestigious American Cheese Society’s annual artisan cheese competition, beating out more than 1,300 other entrants. Oregon cheeses took a jaw-dropping 22 prizes overall in the competition. Business for our cheese makers, even in a down economy, is booming.

What’s so special about the way we separate the curds from the whey? What’s different for manufacturers today as they approach the ages-old craft of cheese making? What do they know that you can benefit from in shopping for and/or making your own cheese?

Science Pub runs from 7 to 9pm, but arrive early (5pm doors open) to secure your beer, grub, and a seat! There’s a $3.00 suggested donation/cover charge.

Have Fun Crossing the River – Rose Festival Fleet Week Begins Today

June 2, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

Rose Festival 2010The 2010 Rose Festival excitement for today is the arrival of boats from the United States Navy and Coast Guard, and the Canadian Maritime Forces – it’s Fleet Week.

(I prefer to call it the Raising and Lowering of the Bridges since the fun part is waiting for the Broadway, Steel, Burnside and Morrison to be raised and lowered so you can cross the river. Fun!)

Here are the arrival times:

  • Wednesday, June 2, 2:30-4:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, June 3, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Ships depart:

  • Monday, June 7, 5-11:30 a.m.

Visit TriMet.com for alerts on how the ship traffic will affect bus and train service.

Last year Joseph Rose of the Hard Drive blog shared some secrets to getting around the Rose Fleet traffic jams, many of which are valid this year too.

And if you see any one from the Canadian Maritime Forces wandering aimlessly downtown, direct them to PortlandPoutine.com!

Video: Evel Knievel Jumps Cars in the Memorial Coliseum

June 1, 2010 by Dave Knows 1 Comment

Stumbled upon this video the other day, and just had to share.

The caption on the video indicates the jump took place on March 31st, 1973. (But the official Evel Knievel timeline does not show a 1973 visit – perhaps it was March 29th, 1974?)

Tuesday Timbers Tidbits (06/01/2010)

June 1, 2010 by Dave Knows Leave a Comment

TimbersWhew, the Portland Timbers finally won a game, against Boca Juniors(!) no less! Let’s hope Saturday’s match boosted the team’s confidence. Sure, it was a friendly, but what a relief to the fans, and probably to the players as well. And what a game! Boca Juniors didn’t play Riquelme, but they fielded an entertaining squad. I like to see teams send the occasional shot in from 20 yards out.

Bright Dike played an impressive match for the Timbers – he’s strong, quick, and slippery. And Rodrigo Lopez played well under pressure – he may be what what this team needs on set pieces. (I love Ryan Pore‘s game in most regards – he’s clearly our best finisher and one of the top playmakers – but he has a tendency to send free kicks low into the wall.)

Read the recaps:

  • An electric night for the Timbers by Kip Kesgard at OregonLive
  • Friendly: Timbers 3 – Boca Juniors 2 by mao at Portland Timbers USL Blog at The Offside
  • Portland Timbers 3, Boca Juniors 2: Timbers stay mentally tough with late goals by Geoffrey C. Arnold at The Oregonian
  • Timbers defeat Boca Juniors on late goal by Lopez at PortlandTimbers.com

Next up in USSF Division 2 play for the Timbers is Carolina, who visit PGE Park on Saturday, June 6th.  The first 2000 fans through the turnstile receive a Timbers fleece blanket, which will come in handy if the weather hasn’t improved by then.

Blog recommendations:

Throw Ins, a newish blog about the Timbers by veteran Timbers fan Drumman, is a must read if you’re interested in the club’s history. Recent blog include newspaper clippings from the 1970s and 80s about the NASL Timbers.

And A Pretty Move, a quality soccer blog covering world soccer and the Portland Timbers has returned – just in time for the 2010 World Cup.

And don’t forget to come out to Studio 20 on June 5th with your Timbers ephemera to make history!
